Alright Im buying the codex on saturday , but I dont know what I wanna base my army around I went with Death korps , But Im getting my Leman russes off Forge world .
But I need to think of how im gonna do it , I face a foot-sloggin' Eldar army , 2 Foot-sloggin' Ultramarine armies , and a Nid Horde
So I was thinking getting a manticore ?

The Leman Russ Plasma Executioner is the universal answer to footsloggers of all varieties.

If you really want to punish them for not having vehicles, take a Colossus squadron as well. You will literally rain death upon them, and they will hate you.

The Manticore is a great all-round Heavy, and almost everybody swears by them, so you can't go wrong by picking up at least one.

Obviously you need to take as many Penal Legionnaires as possible. Fill your Elites and Fast Attack slots with Ratlings and Rough Riders (charge with the Ratlings, stand back and shoot with the Rough Riders). Don't bother with Heavy Support slots, they're all worthless.

Oh, and the only way to lead an IG army is with a Primaris Psyker.

Vanilla Leman Russ with some heavy bolter sponsons helps to clear out the board if you're sitting still. That's 9 heavy bolters and a template for 170 points. I'd avoid the flamers for the simple reason that if you're close enough for flamers, you're close enough to get assaulted. A pimped out Executioner is great for the first two turns. After that, it's a gigantic target. That's not to say it isn't awesome, just be aware it will never survive a entire game.

Basalisks and and Medusas will also ruin their days. A colossus isn't great against MEQs, but will clear out the eldar and nids handily.

Manticores are so amazing that it hurts. Sure the AP isn't great, but the sheer damage it can put out is bordering on insane. Remember to roll for number of attacks BEFORE scatter. Then roll that many scatter dice.

A good rule of thumb for the IG is if you can take one, take two. Tanks, artillery, troops, anything. Take two if you can, and you will be rewarded for your decision to bring a ton of firepower to the table.

This hasn't been my experience. Usually the executioners survive. You have to protect them, and I lose most of my games where they both go dark, but they can be insulated pretty well.

Yep, my executioner either dies very early, or is glanced into submission T1-2, or it lives the entire game. If it's alive and firing for the first 2 turns, there just doesn't seem to be that much stuff left over to kill it late game.

...assuming, of course, it isn't such a large target that it's just neutralized right away.

As for the OP, your support choices should be dependent on your core choices. How you plan your infantry platoons will have a great deal to say about which HS choices should be taken.

You put a reasonable amount of terrain on, and holding people to TLOS rules and more than 2" into cover = save, and suddenly it becomes harder to achieve 'optimal anti blast formation' without making sacrifices in other areas.

Against footslogging Eldar and the Nid horde you might want to use a Leman Russ Eradicator. Strength 6 means you're wounding most anything on 2s, and it's double the toughness of Gaunts so they won't be getting FnP from their Tervigons. Also, it ignores cover, which is awesome. You can also just magnetize all the options for a Leman Russ; it isn't very hard. This would let you take this against an Eldar/Nid opponent, and a standard battlecannon against Marines.

That's well put. I feel like I've either been playing substandard opponents, or coherency isn't as easy to maintain as assumed.

I keep spamming this canned response, because every game I've played I've been able to spread out and get cover. I've never had problems with small blast weapons.

Yes, the board is always going to be different, but nothing that the board does means you can't spread out properly.

Is there anything you actually do have problems with? Based on your advice, you seem to not really be worried about anything.

IG have an answer to just about everything. It's what makes them awesome.
