As a new player, I have a starter ABR army and a SM battleforce, the same as 2 of my other friends and a couple others have their own armies, as new players, were desperately trying to get core rules down and enjoy ourselves.
Myself, always thinking ahead, (and thinking big, which I need to curb) reading on the current expansions of the game and other 40k games ( BFG, Inquisitor). My goal is to have choice armies (like a SM, IG, Tau) as well as my groups armies, and making a huge, persistent never ending campaign.
For those that have the expansions, some opinions and comments would be appreciated.
Planetstrike and Cities of Death seem like a must, and Planetary Empires seems cool for planetary capture and control. Just looking for something well-supported and that other gamers are familiar with.

Plaetary Empires is good. You can easily add homemade rules to it so it's pretty adaptable.
Planetstrike and Cities of Death aren't really played that much for certain reasons.
CoD because it is 4th ed. so the rules get a touch complex however if you work over some of the rules and smooth others out it is workable. Planetstrike is insanely biased and apparently not worth playing competetively but it's good for a laugh.
Apocalypse... well it's basically chaos with a large large blast template strapped to it's head, unless you have relatively few players and a well organised army and turn system you will likely never finish a match but a great amount of tiny plastic people will die in fear and large explosions.

What about that "field all the tanks you own" Spearhead one?
And if you're really thinking big then go for Apocalypse

Battle missions is good to pick up if only for Kill-team.
Not sure on Spearhead... haven't played it or seen it played much. Though at a glance it seems to be more of an addition to normal play whereas the others were radically different styles of play.

I've heard Cities of Death and Planetstrike needed reworking from some vet players, how sad. I haven't heard much on Kill-Team missions, I will have to look into that. I guess the beautiful thing is, as far as rules go, use them or not use them, but as a guide. If we get huge brass ones to play Tournaments, though, not sure what background we'd need. For campaign purposes, looking at Battlefleet Gothic too....

If you're planning on doing a really big perpetual campaign kill-team and apocalypse can be used to represent the small and big battles respectively.

So I guess I should ask where I can find Kill-Team rules...unless there already in the 5th edition book. Apocolypse seems popular.

They're in the Battle Missions book.
