Yep, no bias at NPR...

James O’Keefe Strikes Again! Activist Auteur Targets NPR
by Juli Weiner March 8, 2011, 1:15 PM

Camcorder-wieding conservative hero James O’Keefe secretly recorded Ron Schiller, a former fund-raising executive at NPR, criticizing the Tea Party. In February, two O’Keefe operatives posed as Muslim-education philanthropists hoping to donate $5 million to NPR The pair “taped the NPR representatives—largely Schiller—answering them with exactly they wanted to hear,” Slate’s Dave Weigel reports. According to the Huffington Post, such desired comments included Schiller’s accusation that the Tea Party is “fanatically involved in people’s personal lives and very fundamental[ly] Christian.” Schiller continued, “I wouldn’t even call it Christian … basically, they believe in white, middle America, gun-toting—it’s pretty scary. They’re seriously racist, racist people.” Tea Partiers are very mad about the part(s) of the statement that is not true.

As the Huffington Post reports, Schiller also praised the station for its termination of Juan Williams, the casually racist commentator who’s since found gainful employment with Fox News, and suggested that the organization is not as dependent on government funding as many anti-NPR Tea Partiers tend to think it is.

Of Schiller’s comments, an NPR spokesperson said, “We are appalled by the comments made by Ron Schiller in the video, which are contrary to what NPR stands for.” [Duh, it’s “National Public Radio”—Ed.] It’s just as well: last week Schiller took at job at the Aspen Institute.

It gets better:

WASHINGTON – NPR president and CEO Vivian Schiller has resigned in the wake of comments by a fellow executive that angered conservatives and renewed calls to end federal funding for public broadcasting.

The chairman of NPR's board of directors announced Wednesday morning that he has accepted Schiller's resignation, effective immediately.

NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik said in a tweet that Schiller was forced out by the board.

A hidden-camera video of an NPR executive calling the tea party racist and saying the network would be better off without federal money has led to that executive's immediate resignation.

Really?

Because as I recall exactly what they wanted to hear was that NPR would take their money and then be biased towards the groups that they pretended to represent, while what they actually heard was that NPR would do no such thing.

Not that we'd know it from the story that you posted, of course.

Fox News doesn't threaten to send me to jail if I fail to give them money to stay on the air.

Also, I don't think anyone ever pretended that Glenn Beck was an unbiased journalist, like NPR is (supposedly) supposed to be.

Do you know how much of your money goes to NPR from taxes?

32 cents. You pay more than 32 cents a day for your television.

And really? Because 1 guy doesn't like Republicans, it doesn't mean that the entirety of NPR. Is the entirety of fox news as bat crazy as Glenn Beck? No! But we all know that.

It's the Republicans trying to kill all democrats. I really don't care, personally, but I think that if the Democrats wanted to, they could take down FOX real fast.

Just out of curiosity, why do the opinions of Schiller indicate a bias at NPR? He was a fundraiser, he wasn't on the editorial board.

...What? NPR isn't funded by anything that could feasibly "send you to jail" if you fail to give them money to stay on the air.

Do they receive public funding? Yes. That's why they're called National Public Radio.
However:
During the 1970s and early 1980s, the majority of NPR funding came from the federal government. Steps were taken during the 1980s to completely wean NPR from government support, but the 1983 funding crisis forced the network to make immediate changes. Now more money to fund the NPR network is raised from listeners, charitable foundations and corporations instead.

Funny how they can do that and still be less biased than a NewsCorp entity, huh?

Also, I don't think anyone ever pretended that Glenn Beck was an unbiased journalist, like NPR is (supposedly) supposed to be.

Tell that to the Tea Party. He's like some kind of folk hero to those loons.

He had nothing to with the media that was being broadcast. How do we not know that the Senior VP of marketing at FOX isn't a communist?

One works for the government and thus all taxpayers, one is private. Its a basic fundamental difference, unless of course you're a dope smoking high school/college boy sucking off parents/the government, in which case those people may not understand that. I'm not saying anyone here is that way though...

Assuming that there are 200 million tax paying citizens in the USA, that works out to more than a billion dollars a year to NPR from the various levels of government.

And government funding is only about 6% of their total revenue. So their real budget is 20 billion, give or take.

Which is around a ten times more revenue than they made in '09.

Which suggests that it's not 32 cents per day, it's 32 cents per year.

Except that $117 wouldn't have been going just to NPR. It would have been going to PBS and various other 'public works' as well. Sorry, but taxes are taxes and you don't get to pick and choose what to support.

They'd probably be better off getting rid of the federal funding, so then they can say things people don't want to hear (but are very true in some cases) without it turning into such a giant cluster-f.

!SOME! tea-partiers are racist bordering on xenophobic, and many of them are extreme christian fundamentalists that would love to teach everyone out of the bible. Also, their representatives want to get way too far into peoples lives, which is pretty hypocritical seeing as they all run on a platform of small government with maximum freedom.

So, its not like he was lying.

This was pretty pathetic compared to some of the bile spewed by Beck & co. tbh.

That's kind of the point, I don't get to choose how to spend my tax dollars. I do get to choose how to spend my time watching Fox News, CNN, or even MSNBC. If you watch a station, then they report this to their advertisers. The advertisers then pay the station. Therefore, my time spent watching Fox, CNN, or MSNBC translates to revinue for that station.

No choice in NPR. I could never listen to the station, and still have to pay for it.

OK, my bad. I assumed it was 32 cents per day.

Still, the point stands, although it becomes even more absurd. I can go to jail if I owe the IRC 32 cents. Awesome.

This thread is another sad example of people felling for the artificial right/left paradigm that the powers that be set up to distract you from how they're taking away your rights, your money and your health. How about focusing on how they shovel money at Israel as fast as they can, and rain toxic chemicals on us from the sky, and load your brain with subliminal programming through the TV?

I love how it says "Tea Partiers are very mad about the part(s) of the statement that is not true."

Implying that some of it is true.

Conservatives love to prattle on and on about the "liberal media." To be fair, except for FOX News (Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, John Gibson, Neil Cavuto, Steve Doocy, E.D. Defeat is one thing, Destroy is another. One make you a political rival, the other an Mortal enemy. For instance I can try to politically beat and trash talk the Religious right movement. When I start making laws targeting them for no other reason than they support the right, we have Issues.

I agree with you friend. As unconsequential as a simple debate about this guy resigning appears to be, it is more fodder for the masses to chew on to stir up bipartisan animosity.

Lets not report how oil speculation and future gambling is driving up the cost of oil while very little actual increase in demand, and an actual surplus of oil supply
Lets not discuss how the Feds new 'negative liablity' accounting scheme allows them to print as much money as possible, give it to whoever they want (they cannot be audited) and send the losses to the treasury and tax payers.
Lets not report on how since 1995 the Forbes 400 have tripled their wealth while while the working class is disappearign the and average 'middle class' wage has dropped $25,000

I consider myself a constitutionalist and love what this country could have been, and while our 'founding fathers' where wealthy aristocrats who didnt want to pay their taxes', I feel they understood the responsiblity in front of them when they wrote the constitution, its just such a shame that lobbyist have bought the house and congress and the constitution is hardly recognizable

Here is a fun read for anyone interested
"Revealed by US Congressman Charles A. Lindbergh, Sr. from Minnesota before the US Congress sometime during his term of office between the years of 1907 and 1917 to warn the citizens.

"We (the bankers) must proceed with caution and guard every move made, for the lower order of people are already showing signs of restless commotion. Prudence will therefore show a policy of apparently yielding to the popular will until our plans are so far consummated that we can declare our designs without fear of any organized resistance. The Farmers Alliance and Knights of Labor organizations in the United States should be carefully watched by our trusted men, and we must take immediate steps to control these organizations in our interest or disrupt them.

At the coming Omaha Convention to be held July 4th (1892), our men must attend and direct its movement, or else there will be set on foot such antagonism to our designs as may require force to overcome. This at the present time would be premature. We are not yet ready for such a crisis. Capital must protect itself in every possible manner through combination ( conspiracy) and legislation.

The courts must be called to our aid, debts must be collected, bonds and mortgages foreclosed as rapidly as possible.

When through the process of the law, the common people have lost their homes, they will be more tractable and easily governed through the influence of the strong arm of the government applied to a central power of imperial wealth under the control of the leading financiers. People without homes will not quarrel with their leaders.

History repeats itself in regular cycles. This truth is well known among our principal men who are engaged in forming an imperialism of the world. While they are doing this, the people must be kept in a state of political antagonism.

The question of tariff reform must be urged through the organization known as the Democratic Party, and the question of protection with the reciprocity must be forced to view through the Republican Party.

By thus dividing voters, we can get them to expand their energies in fighting over questions of no importance to us, except as teachers to the common herd. Thus, by discrete action, we can secure all that has been so generously planned and successfully accomplished."
