Terminators are pretty pricey, so I plan to get only one squad unless they go down from 50$. Anyways, I'm wondering if I should get the ones with storm shields and lighting claws, or the other ones with the bolter pistols and miniguns.

Do you want to shoot or do you want to assault?

Well, I've just started painting, and I'm still learning the ropes. So I'm wondering what most people usually use.

It all depends on the role you want them to fulfill on the table. Do you have the Codex and an army planned out? That will really help you save money by not buying models you won't use. If you are just worried about painting and not playing then get what ever you think looks best.

I think I'm gonna get the close combat ones. So far I've hard good reviews about them. Right now I'm planning a SM army and I'll probably pick up a codex soon.

If you want a hard hitting assault unit, there isn't much in the Space Marine codex that can out preform an Assault Terminator Squad assaulting out of a Land Raider Crusaider or Redeemer. I like to run a mix of 3 stormshield and thunder hammers with 4 lightning claws with a Chaplain, but any mix will work fine. That's a ton of points to wrap up in one unit, though.

If you want a mobile unit that can form a stormbolter gun line with some heavy weapons, then slap 10 terminators with 2 assault cannons with a librarian sporting Gate of Infinity. Very fun to play. Can lay down some awesome firepower.

Or, keep the unit as a small 5-man squad and deepstrike into your opponents back yard to pull units off objectives and threaten their back line.

There are other ways to play them, but these are the roles that I've been using. I don't deepstrike assault terminators very often. Too risky to lose to scatter and the opponent just needs to play keep away to avoid being assaulted with them.

Well Dark Angels can mix and match.
So if you collect them you don't have to worry.

Thunderhammer and Storm shields for all 5 Terminators. They are hands down the best Terminator in the SM book, and can be a threat to almost anything in the game.

As you progress more, get them a Land Raider redeemer and a HQ to go along with them. A good choice would be Vulkan He'Stan or Captain Lysander.

If you're good with a file and want options, go for the Space Wolves Wolf Guard terminators. They have almost every single Terminator weapon loadout (sans the Cyclone launcher) and are the same price as normal termies. You get ALOT more bang for your buck.

Ok, due to the fact that many people have suggested both ways, I have come to a decision. DEAL HUNTING! I'm gonna search the webs to find two squads for maybe 30 dollars each. I just can't justify 100$ for 10 plastic men.

Try that in canada, we have to spend 120 dollars (after tax it's more like 135) for 10 plastic men, and our dollar is almost on par with the american dollar!

A cheap alternative is to get the Assault on Black Reach Terminators, who are usually 1/3 the price of normal termies, but come with no options. They're great if you can convert. Otherwise go with Space Wolf terminators. Even though you still get the same amount of men at the end, at least the increased amount of plastic feels justified (to a degree).

If you want to start playing Space Marines, Assault on Black Reach is an excellent start.

I'd order this Special kit from Apocabitznow.com. They took out the orks and added marines from another box. You get:

112-page Rulebook
33-page Getting Started booklet
Dice
Templates
Range Rulers
Two Space Marine Captains
Twenty Tactical Space Marines
Ten Space Marine Terminators
Two Space Marine Dreadnoughts

A GREAT way to start a space marine army.

I have 5 assault terminators to sell (and a terminator Librarian with a storm shield) if you are looking for some. PM me.
