I've been toying around with the idea of doing a prospero burns truescale army since the first rumors of the
GK 2 wound models came out. to give a bit of background... i've always been miffed at
GW for making marines in the tabletop game play completely different from the way they act/fight in the novels. i realize that the game would be unplayable if a marine truely was equal to 100 guardsmen in a fight as the fluff states but i've always wanted to have a more palpable difference in the size and playstyle of the various armies. when i heard that the grey knights were getting two wound troops units, i thought i had found my "movie" marines legal playlists using the
GK rules and true scale marine figs. since my army might be prospero burns
SW themed, i'm hoping to incorporate giant wolves in some fashion but have been having a hard time trying to figure out exactly how. now that the first pics of the
GK are out, i think i may have my first idea.
basically, my army will be a true scale force with marines significantly larger than guardsmen (or clan serfs in this particular army). here's a pic of what a truescale/artscale will look like compared with normal
SM and
IG (borrowed from someone else's fine project on the interwebs):
my idea for the dreadknight is to use the overly large thunderwolves made by various manufacturers and mount it on a rock cliff base to specifically increase its height as well as using the appropriate valkyrie sized base to mount them on. it would be similar to this but will a large slanted slab of stone underneath for the wolf to climb/descend.
would something like that be acceptable as a substitute for the new grey knight dreadknight for you guys? (see pic below). the normal wolf with the rider is easily the height of the daemon prince and would probably get to about the mid chest of the little baby grey knight in his carrier.
to go over some of the easily forseeable rules issues that may come up...
1) cover: always an issue when you change the size of a monstrous creature (which the new dreadknight is). its not much of an issue for him though because he actually has a 4+ invul save so realistically would rarely ever actually need cover (he's too big to fit in a fortification anyways so can't really benefit from a 3+). if an issue does come up, i have no problem simply going with my opponent's view on the 50% covered rule if he were a real dreadknight (
DK) model.
2)
LOS: somewhat related to the above in that "shortening" the model can decrease the chance of getting
LOS. partly solved by the raising of the model on a foam cliff but i don't see it being as tall as the actual model, maybe about 2/3 to 3/4 the height. once again, i plan on assaulting with the model and being out in the open the vast majority of the time so it shouldn't be too much of a problem; when it is, i don't have an issue with just giving
LOS to the opponent unless i'm behind a giant mountain piece of terrain.
3) jumpjets vs cavalry: the wolves themselves obviously fit better into the cavalry classification but the
DK is a monstrous creature with a jetpack (the loadout i plan to use). i needed a statline that gave the wolf the mobility it needs/looks like it has and this was the closest fit.
i humbly await the onslaught of abuse! if there are any other rules vs. modelling issues that i didn't think of, feel free to chime in with them also. i'm not trying to model for advantage but simply trying to add a cool looking fig to the army that matches the theme i'm going for. (movie marines!)
