I played a against some one who was using a pistol wraith and the following occurred:
He possessed my Juggernaught which was being marshalled by my man o war Kovnik. I was then told the only way that I could get rid of the wraith was to damage my Juggernaught and have the wraith fail his command check. I did 1 point of damage to the Juggernaught via my Widowmaker solo. The wraith failed his check. I then wanted to move my Juggernaught but was told I couldn't since he wasn't mine at the start of my turn. Then I was told that I couldn't shoot at the wraith since he doesn't appear until my opponent's turn. So the wraith just took over my Juggernaught at the start of his next turn.

My questions are:
a) Is this how the rules work?
b) How can you kill the wraith once it enters a jack without destroying the jack?
c) Aside from the obvious (kill it before it gets too close) how do you stop a wraith from possessing a jack in the first place if you can?

Thank you for your input.

I think you're talking about the Machine Wraith.

1) Close. The wraith doesn't come out until his control phase.
2) You can't.
3) Magic ranged attacks or only run Character jacks.

Welcome to one of Cryx's many immunities to the game...

Thanks. I meant that the wraith doesn't come out until his turn. So can I somehow kill the wraith after I force it out of my Jack but before it comes back onto the board? Or is the only solution kill it on sight with an extreme predjudice?

On a marshalled warjack, you're pretty much fethed: The Wraith can just hop back in immediately after it's forced out. You basically have to destroy the warjack, then kill it as it comes out.

Nope, only way you can kill it is while it's actually on the table. Admittedly, you can prevent it from even being able to return to the table by completely surrounding the jack with infantry so it has nowhere to exit, but bunching up models like that typically falls under the category of A Bad Idea.

Well, killing the jack while the thing's inside kills the Wraith too. And yeah, making a 3 inch bubble of infantry around a warjack falls easily under the Bad Idea heading.

Do note a Wraith can only possess a `Jack with a functional Cortex. If you blow your own `Jack's Cortex out he won't be able to jump back in. If you kill your own `Jack, the Wraith dies with it.

good tip, at the start of a game where the opponent has a machine wraith take out your jacks cortexes. That will teach the opponent to put a 1 pt model on the table

And yes, I am being sarcastic...

I know Cygnar, Khador, and Retribution have good to silly access to magical ranged attacks. What about Menoth? Only thing that comes to mind is taking Midwinter.

Cryx deserves to get it.

actually even good access to magical weapons is not nescesarily the answer to the problem. The ghost has to be seen first. you also have to hit and that can be difficult sometimes.remember that a wall does not stop a ghost.

Menoth also has plenty of access to magic weapons. more so then khador if I remember correctly. then again I am no expert in the anti ghostly stuff. Only in using my ghosts, the machinewraits, pistolwraiths and blackbanes...

I'm not talking about magical melee weapons, but ranged ones (Gun Mages, Mittens, Graylords, etc.). Seeing the ghost generally isn't a problem for any of those armies (except the Mittens since they still have to break stealth). Having a gun that can hit it is the problem.

Which goes back to my question about Menoth and magical shooting attacks...

Call me crazy, but I don't recall any way to increase the SPD on that model and it has to be BTB to posess a 'jack. Stay more than 6-7" (can't recall the SPD) at all times. Also, all of those factions have access to Aiyana, so if it's a real problem just pay 4 pts. She does other things too. Incidentally Ret has Discordia. SP10 POW 14 Magical will certainly do it in and even is she misses she can stay out of posession range while firing, so try again next turn.

Exemplar Errants with their magical crossbows are the only ones that have magical weapons on the profile.

Does Aiyanna work for Menoth?

Wraith only needs to be within 1", not BtB, to use it's Possession. The Cryx Dragoon has an ability that lets Undead near him all move 1". Short of that, I don't believe I know of any other fun movement buffs, so that's a 9" potential threat range on it.

well skarre has a movement buff that activates after it is hit and survives. not very usefull in this case, but it is there...

BTW all that talk about shooting the wraith is getting past some of the points a cryx army has going for it. We have a lot of cheap options that can really hurt if any one of them gets there.

Do not field 1 wraith, field 2. then also use a unit to somewhat screen it and keep pressure on the opponent while running in. For what 7 points 2 wraiths and 10 mechthralls are running towards the enemy on a flank. The enemy will then choose between letting the mechs live or the wraith. If the opponent has enough firepower it will be no problem, but most balanced listst will not be able to take out both in a single turn of shooting.

2 Wraiths and 10 McThralls actually total 11 points.
But I do agree with going with 2 Pistol Wraiths instead of 1 if able to.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I like to take them in trios.

Discordia is immune to it anyway since she's a character jack.

MAchine wraiths are a bane around here, especially to Jack marshalled models. Your opponent is right, When his wraith pops out it's his turn and then he hops back in, still he doesnt do any activating of the jack, and usually when its possesed he turns his attention from damaging it. Just keep pinging him with widow maker and take out the cortex columns, if there is time.
