Overall the response you will receive is no. They are outclassed by assault terminators for the points and are using up valuable FA slots for speeders. As mentioned, the best use for your FA slots will probably be land speeders, followed by MM attack bikes. That said, I have had some fun with a 10 man assault squad in a drop pod in a vulkan list before. 10 assault marines, 2 flamers, a thunder hammer on the SGT, Vulkan, and a techmarine w/ a servo harness dropping in can lay down some serious hurt on infantry. It's a fun unit but far from competitive.

Everything except withstanding enemy fire. Throw a multimelta and heavy flamer on it, fly it around, set infantry on fire and use the multimelta on big things.
Then watch a hydra battery knock whole squadrons out of the air. Split the vehicles out, if you have the slots open on your chart, 3 squadrons of landspeeders with one vehicle each is going to get you farther than 1 squadron of three vehicles for a lot of reasons.

There is also the typhoon build for speeders. This a great fire support unit capable of moving 12" to get side armor on a vehicle and fire 2 krak missles. It can also be good against infantry with a 12" move, fire heavy bolter and use 2 frag rounds (Str. 4, so a defensive weapon). If you are going to do a squadron of speeders, the typhoon is the best to do it with. Back to the original topic of assault marines, they are decent in lower point games with a chaplain leading them. Also, depending on your local meta game, the ability to tote 2 flamers is not bad. They are kind of a niche unit that are only really good in a couple of circumstances, and even then, assault termies will usually do better in those situations.

You could, but then it would be "confused". Generally you go one way or the other. Both builds can take on tanks and infantry. I think that running a squadron of 2 typhoons for anti infantry/transport popping supported by 2 individual MM or MM/HF speeders is a great tactic. The MM or MM/HF is great for going after big tanks or hitting units of grouped up infantry.
