I'm toying with the idea of having 20-man squads of Black Templar infantry. That is 10 Initiates and 10 Neophytes per squad. The only issue I see with this is they can't use transports, as nothing can transport 20 models at once but hey, I will solve that later.

Right now I'm debating what I should outfit the neophytes (scouts) with. Either shotguns or Pistols&CCW. I would like to hear from the community their points of view.
If it's important, I intend to have a roughly even mix of melee and shooty squads. Melee to tie up dangerous shooting units in CC (mainly things like Broadsides, I will really only ever play against Tau and the Guard.) and the shooty ones to hold objectives. Is that sounding okay?

Thanks

If you are playing tau and guard, you really should have some way of getting up close to them. Try using vehicals and making them into 10 man squads, 5 scouts/5 marines if your truely set on having equal numbers of neophytes.
Also, tau and guard are shooty armies To say again, use transports. Other wise your foot sloggers will walk most of the game while getting shot at by two of the best shooty armies out there. Is not fun walking and getting shot for 3 turns before getting to do anything with most ur army.

You are correct, my friend also pointed out the error of my ways there. So that's it. 10 man squads. Still, what about the weapons?

CCW/BP - if you do anything else every BT player will feel the disturbance in the warp and come after you with those red whippy stick measuring things and beat the daemon out of you.

A 20 man BT squad is meant to be a CC machine, as such you give every dude CCW/BP except 2 (1 Initiate gets a melta/plasma gun one Initiate gets a power weapon/power fist)

Note: Accept any challenge will give all the initiates preferred enemy but not the neophytes, if you want the neophytes to re-roll their missed CC hits then you need to attach a chaplain to the squad (a good choice anyway since they will pass their righteous zeal checks every time)

...and can add up to 3" of rerollable Zeal distance with his free crusader seals and his upgrade servitors, while letting you zeal towards any enemy.

but if you want a big squad you can fit 8neo 8intiates in an lrc for a nice size squad

Usually, a pretty mean crusader squad would consist of 10 initiates, an Independant character and 5 neo's, mounted on a LRC.

On foot they get shot at, and you can't really direct who they're running towards I suppose. Plus, it's a pretty daunting distraction to soak up some fire rather than have your support units picked off.

All very good advice so far, thanks a bunch.

Also, I obviously can't afford an LR Crusader for every crusader squad, so what about the other squads? What sort of organisation do you folks recommend for those?

4 Neophytes as the LRC can only carry 15 guys. Thats why I usually put a couple IC's with a 10 man squad (or a command squad with attached chapy) and use an LRC or two as a screen for my blob squad.
