I recently finished a new devestator squad and it's been sprayed with two or three thin coats of Army Painter Anti-Shine Matt Varnish. The result...some white residue on the black should pads. My response was to paint some chaos black over the white residue. The other effect of the multiple coats of anti-shine was of course that chainmail armor on the marines was dulled down to a fortress/codex grey. Can somebody tell me how effective it would be to simply re-spray the models with gloss varnish and then with a coat of matt varnish (as suggested in the article)?

Re-spraying gloss should solve the frosting issue, although nothing is for certain with sealer issues, it is the best chance.

Matte though will always dull the metallic effect of metallics. The matte coat diffuses light softly over the model, counteracting the very distinct and directional shine of the metallic flakes. Depending on the brand and thickness with which it is applied, the dulling will range from 'it's not as shiny and metallic as it was before' to 'that metal is straight up just regular grey paint now' . The only way to ensure avoiding all the above issues is to selectively paint on good quality sealers by hand... Matte on skin, 50/50 matte/satin on colored armor, and satin or gloss on metals.

That is obviously a big time investment though... All in all, putting up with dulled metals is the most productive method when painting in bulk.

Hope that helps -

Just wanted to say thank you very much for putting together this post. After using dullcote on my guard I noticed that the transparent flyer base and canopy of my Valkyrie had frosted over. A quick application of some gloss varnish fixed the issue right quick.

Thanks again.
