Bounding Assault Marine

I searched for Night Spinner specific help but didn't find anything.
This is how I have been playing it:
I roll my scatter dice and the 2D6 to see how far it goes if it scatters.
If I don't like it, I pick the entire set up and roll again, taking the second result.
While I pummeled my friends marines he noted my practice and said that technically I should roll the scatter dice. Keep or reroll its results, then roll the 2D6.
My way is much more advantagous for me obviously, and his way is less so but doesn't ruin the gun or anything, so I want to get this right.

Units with twin-linked scatter weapons can re-roll the scatter die, if they so choose.
Edit: Sorry, didn't read enough detail of your post I think. I roll the same way you do - the 2D6 with the scatter die. I don't have my rulebook on me, but I believe the rulebook tells you to do this.
To re-roll scatter then, I would imagine you'd re-roll all three. But I could be wrong.

You must re-roll both the scatter die and the 2D6.

Just chiming is to state that you are playing it correctly, the big thing to not forget those is that if you don't have LoS to your target then you can't subtract your BS.
