I managed to sneak a quick 1000 pt game in with my roommate (odd that we don't get to game since we live in the same cloes-er-room).
Me: MOAR BODIES:
CCS w/ 3x melta
2x
PCS w/ 3x melta
2x blobs (30 guardsmen w/3x melta) + commissar w/
PW, sgts w/
PW+meltabombs
3x Ogryn
Vendetta
Him: ALL the retinues:
Inquisitor lord with all sorts of silliness, 2 x acolytes, 2x chirugeon, familiar, penitent, sage, warrior - all in a Land Raider
(pretty sure he was going for a Noah's ark thing here, grab 2 of each type...)
6 adeptus arbites with 2 flamers and a cannoness, in an immolator with heavy flamers
6
inq. stormtroopers with 2 plasma guns, in an immolator with
HB
Vindicare Assassin
Orbital Strike
The mission was capture and control with a pitched battle deployment.
the objectives are circled in red.
I won first turn, and decide to take it. After deployment the field looked like:
The red circled squads are there just to distinguish them from the massive blob surrounding them, the blue are my commissars, the most likely target of his sniper (conveniently perched at about the same height as the Vendetta)
I turbo boost the Vendetta up to scout the way ahead for the advancing guardsmen.
My first turn:
I move up with everything on the ground and run as well, while maneuvering the Vendetta out of sight of the Land Raider, while shooting at the Vindicare. 2 of the Lascannon beams were directly on target, but his enhanced reflexes kicked in. Sadly for him, his perch on top of the statue did not leave enough room to dodge, and he tumbled to his death.
His first turn:
With his first turn he shuffles the Lain Raider back to get a decent shot off at the Vendetta, moves the immolator full of flamey goodness towards the blobs, and pokes the plasma/bolter immolator out from behind his objective.
In the shooting phase, the Land Raider scores 2 pens, one of which was intercepted by the falling body of the Vindicare (blocked by cover). The pen that snuck through immobilized the Vendetta.
The plasma gunners inside the Vendetta felt emboldened by the Land raiders success and scored 4 hits, with 3 pens, causing 2 weapon destroyed results and a shaken. Just to highlight this portion, with
bs 4, he got 4/4 hits, he needs a 6 to pen, he gets 3/4 then gets a 1,3, and a 4. WOW. I was not amused. He chooses the hull mounted Lascannons, and the left wing. (the right wing had a nice shot...at the statue).
My turn 2:
I move all the infantry up, as well as disembark the
PCS that had been inside the Vendetta.
That same
PCS is now in a sweet position to destroy the Immolator that the stormtroopers are riding in. They fail Bid, but still get 3 hits for 3 pens, wrecking the immolator twice.
The rest of the infantry are given Move, Move, Move! and get 4+'s on the run rolls.
In assault I decide to leave the newly disembarked stormtroopers alone, so that the
PCS can better shield my main blob from the flame immolator (
PCS circled in blue):
His turn 2:
He rolls for Orbital Strike, and gets it. This makes me nervous, as I fear he'll place it over my objective. He is about to tell me where it's coming in, but decides to draw out the suspense until the shooting phase.
The Land Raider moves straight up towards my right side blob and disgorges the inquisitor with all her retinues
The flame immolator moves into BBQ range
The storm troopers, unfazed by the wreck of their ride enact vengeance and toast the poor
PCS.
The flame immolator toasts the right side blob killing 11.
The orbital bombardment comes in, on the crater in the center. This makes things very interesting, most things on the board could get scattered onto...but, I cover most of the board... so his chances for a happy ending are pretty good. It scatters into the center and misses everything.
His inquisitor squad charges the still smoking right side blob after firing their pistols at them. At this point it is the inquisitor with ALL of the retinues vs a 15 man blob. He slays 2 guardsmen with the Inquisitor lord and 3 others with attacks from assorted henchmen, while the blob lays down 12
PW attacks, 11 hits and 5 wounds PLUS 12 regular attacks for 4 wounds. He does some fancy wound allocations, making 2 of the
PW attacks disappear with the magic of chirugeons. We tie for combat, so no resolution is needed.
(This pic has been damaged beyond repair by malfunctioning archive servitors)
Turn 3:
I shuffle the ogryn right, planning to destroy the flame immolator and let them assualt the juicy insides.
The left blob continues to advance upon the objective and his very brave storm troopers.
I fire the
CCS at the flame immolator (after failing
BiD again) and get a pen for an explodes. The cannoness takes a wound, while the rest of the squad gets out of the superheated wreckage without a scratch. My
CCS takes 2 wounds as well, while the Ogryn and the
PCS don't much care about how flaming metal.
The
PCS now left without a good target to use meltaguns on decide that microwaves can't be good for people, and to find out how long you have to point it at someone before they explode. [the answer: quite a while, the cover blocked all the shots]
The ogryn let loose with the ripper guns causing 6 wounds killing 2 bodies, a flamer, and putting another wound on the cannoness.
The valk takes a potshot at the Land Raider with its remaining Lascannon, but barely scratches the paint with a 1.
In the assault phase, the ogryn get pumped up to squish the cannoness, but are distracted by a butterfly that managed to survive all the ripper gun fire. They are so distracted by this butterfly they roll a ONE on their assault roll (into difficult terrain) as they go chasing it.
The
CCS who also charged valiantly into the crater are dismayed to notice that they are ALONE vs the cannoness and what's left of her squad, but hope the butterfly will fly towards them.
In
CC, we each kill a minion, and pray that the captain of the orbiting ship holds fire next turn.
The left side blob does terrible things to the storm troopers and then consolidates onto the objective.
The
Inq lord flubs all her attacks and her retinue kills another guardsman. The right side blob on the other hand lays down 3
PW wounds and a regular wound. The Inquisitor Lord reconsiders her life choices and CHOOSES to break, fleeing for the safety of her land raider. Blinded by the sparkle of a Lascannon bouncing off the Land Raider, my blob does not catch up to her and she escapes.
his turn 3:
Instead of climbing into the Land Raider, the Inquisitor Lord orders it to tank shock the blob. I death or glory, penning and exploding it. This causes all 10 remaining guardsmen to take a hit, and 5 of them fail their saves. The inquisitor squad takes 2, which the Chirugeon fixes quickly.
After losing 1/2 of their remaining comrades, that blob has had enough. It tries to break, but the commissar, righteous in his fury executes the cowardly sergeant who attempted to instigate the retreat.
The inquisitor lord, sensing the low morale of the troops in front of her attempts to make them break again by using Divine Pronouncement. I just pass my modified leadership rule (which raises a question, does stubborn work against this, or only against the negative modifier incurred by losing combat?)
The Ogryn, after catching the butterfly, find themselves directly under the incoming orbital bombardment shot.
The last thing anyone heard the bonehead say was, "NOT
DA PRETTY FLAPPY!"
In assault, the
CCS and the Cannoness continue their gimp fight unaided, with the
CCS dropping the last Adeptus, leacing the Cannoness to stare down the company commander alone.
On the right, the inquisitor lord charges the savaged right side blob, but inflicts no wounds. The blob throws down 2
PW wounds, killing the Chirugeon and leaving the Inquisitor lord with 1 wound.
Turn 4:
I move the right side blob so that some of the guardsmen have a shot at the cannoness if she wins the duel in the crater, while leaving some of the blob on the objective (ahh, the beauty of having an infantry unit large enough to deserve the swarm rule)
The
PCS decides to head back to base camp since there's an objective with no one sitting on it I should claim.
In assault, the cannoness falls to the Company Commander, while the blob cheers him on.
Looking up to take stock of the battle, the tired company commander is very worried to notice that the trrops he sent up the right flank, hoping to crush the heretics between them and the left side unit is mysteriously missing:
On the right, the Inquisitor kills 2 more guardsmen, leaving the Commissar and one sergeant to defy her. The sergeant, worried that he be deemed a heretic attempts to run, before before executed by the Commissar. The commissar feels like a big man after shooting his last comrade in the back of the head from behind, and decides he can take the inquisitor himself.
His turn 4:
The orbital strike hits 4 guardsmen who are now cursing moving up to watch the company commander finish off the Cannoness, while the commissar and inquisitor both circle each other arguing the tenets of the imperial creed (no wounds unsaved):
Turn 5:
I shuffle some troops around, getting ready to
FRFSRF the inquisitor if she survies.
The Commissar falls to her in
CC due to a dirty trick involving a wardrobe 'malfunction', she consolidates 5 while fixing her bodice.
his turn 5:
she heads straight for my objective, the orbital kills off another 3 guard, while she casts Divine Pronouncement at the blob on her objective. I fail the modified
ld test, and cap a sgt to stay put.
She then charges the squad on my objective (not sure this is legal, using a psychic power on one squad, charging another?? It doesn't say specifically that I noticed in the
BRB, as 'psychic shooting attack' is never actually defined that I could find).
The squad, unfazed by the inquisitor put her down, however they did leave the objective to pile in to crush her under their heels.
The results, I tabled my opponent and held one objective
