So, there's a new "Grey Knights" codex out (or about to be out).
But there is no new "Daemonhunters" codex out.
Does that mean that someone can use either one, despite them clearly being meant as the same army? Playing using either the Daemonhunters codex or the Grey Knights codex, since technically they are two different armies that are just remarkably similar?
(yes, yes, I'm sure there's going to be a slew of "lol y would you want to use the old 1 daemonhunters are the suck!!!!11one" comments, but it's more an academic question than one for trying to gain an advantage)

In events or pick-up games you'll have a real hard time, for the same reason that people can't/don't play the old hordes of chaos/beasts of chaos army books in Fantasy.
But alongside friends you can use anything you want, aslong as they accept it.

can you? sure, with your opponent's permission. its obvious that the grey knight book is the replacement for the daemonhunters one just like the witchhunter book was the replacement for the sister of battle codex from 2nd edition. would you allow an opponent to use that book instead of the witchhunters one??
would i personally allow it if my opponent asked? sure, as long as they don't mix and match (only old stuff OR new stuff, not the best of both); if my opponent just tried to force it on me, i wouldn't allow it as the intent of the book is quite clear. also, would a tourney allow it? incredibly doubtful after its been out for a month or two. basically, ask ahead of time.

Even in pick-up games, it really just comes down to who you're playing.
I've had opponents use older versions of codexes in the past, due to them not having bought the new one yet. It's not really that big an issue... we've all been playing 5th edition using the old DH codex up until now. What difference does it really make if someone wants to keep using it?
In a tournament, though, you'll usually have rules specifying which codexes are in use.

That's a red herring.
3rd edition invalidated all of the 2nd edition codexes, as they were no longer compatible with the core rules. The edition changes since have instead kept existing codexes current, just updating them where necessary to stay valid with core rules changes until their could be revised completely.
So there's a world of difference between someone wanting to use a 3rd edition or later codex, and wanting to use a 2nd edition codex.

I can see it now. "I'll use my New Grey Knights and since there Space Marines, I'll also use Deamonhunters to take some Gery Knights as Allies."
But really with friend play what you want.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor. |

I'd say that Codex: Grey Knights pretty clearly replaces Codex: Daemonhunters. It's the same issue that we all saw with Codex: Assassins.
And, for that matter, the 3rd edition Codex: Tau would still be legit, since they only released a Codex: Tau Empire in 4th.

More like when the IG codex came out and people still wanted to use the Catachan codex. It was obviously replaced, but lots of people still claimed it was valid. At least when DH came out, GW actually did an FAQ saying that the Assassins codex was replaced. I think that's the only time they've ever made that sort of statement. generally it was just determined by checking to see what they allowed at the GTs.
