Pennants and Aquilas, just how much of that rubbish would a Pre-Heresy Imperial Guard army have?  [RSS] Share on facebook Share on Twitter Submit to Reddit

Right now I'm building an Imperial Guard army that's set around about the circa M.32-33 period (The Forging period in particular for you fluff buffs), and I'm just trying to decide just what amount Imperial livery and penants to stick on them. The question I'm wanting to know is should I go about stick Aquilas on every breastplate (they were marks of honour back then mind you, not just postage stamps...) and penants hanging from every walker's groin plates, or would little to no insignia (other than regimental) be the right way to go? Really it probably could go either way, but I'm just wanting to know your opinions on what I should go for. The basic infantry look (unintentionally) something similar to the baddies (¬¬) from Killzone, and the tanks have an archaic look that puts them at odds with the tech of the 41st Millenium-think what the Malcadors are to Russ'. They look old, but I don't think that they don't have the gothic look that's put forward by the art as much-though the GW models don't seem to have much of that either... There's not much art out there for guard of this period, nor have I found any actual armies set in this period either, so its difficult for me to decide where to go with these guys- I mean they look fine as they are, but pennants streaking off of a Medusa Siege Gun's barrel can go a ways for fluff. Oh and the regiment hails from a planet right on the edges of Imperial space, and has only been just brought back into the Imperial fold after being seperated from it during the Heresy-thus i'm going for that chripy "we're off to reunite humanity for tah Emperor" look that everyone seemed to have at the time. ^^'

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

From the background you already made for your army, I would go for very few "rubbish".

As you said, aquilas were a mark of honor at the time, so I would keep those for command vehicles and elite infantry.

Victory pennants and purity seals seem to go with the grim-dark theme of the 41st millenium, so I guess you should avoid using a lot of those for your M33 regiment.

In addition, since your regiment's homeworld has just been reunited with Terra, I guess they would still keep some of their symbols, markings and that Imperial markings would not be a common sight.

So here is my view: keep the imperial rubbish (aquilas, pennants, etc) for your command and elite units and leave the rest of your army more "sober", with less imperial decorations.

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.
