Hello guys, I play Space wolves and recently I had decided to buy the Canis Wolfborn model because I like the way he looks and his fluff. I think he is kinda mediocre if not bad in terms of playing though. You all must have heard at one point how he is overcosted and a Wolf Lord of the same type would be much better or how easily he could die with some crappy shooting. I also never thought much of his ability because he already has 5 attacks , +1 from ofhand and one more when charging, counterattacking. When I got the model however I tried to see how many models could possibly make base contact with him and realised that their number is 12( !) plus offhand and charging he could reach a potential of 14 attacks with a rending rerollable str 5 power weapon at initiative 5. This kinda makes me reconsider his worth. And so I started thinking ways to utilise his ability best and I have come to this question: In a scenario when he makes cc with a mob of orks or any other army that has squads of more than ten models, what are the exact rules for pile-in and making base contact with the enemy? For example could the opposing player move his models on base contact with Canis strategicalyleaving some space of half an inche between them so that he could avoid maximising the number of models that can reach base with Canis? What do you think? I couldn't find a clear answer in the rulebook.

Your opponent only has to make btb contact if possible; it does NOT require him to ensure that he makes btb leaving no gap between the first model in btb and every subsequent one (because only the first is required to move the shortest distance) - so yes, you can lose attacks that way.

In my experience from ork boyz getting charged by greater demons, carnifexes or hive tyrants, it is very unlikely that more than 6 or 7 will be in base contact after pile in, even if you charge the mob somewhere near its center. And in those cases I tried to get as many orks in btb as possible, something I won't do against anything actually gaining a benefit from being in btb.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Ok , Thanks guys, makes sense. So , he gets 6 base attacks instead of five, depending on your opponent's experience

Just one small thing to ad, the FAQ state that not even Canis get rending attacks if he use special weapons, so unless you find a way to displace his claws, no rending ability.

(unless you take the faq statement to disallow rending from the TW, but that the faq statement dont include Canis personal special rule "rending". Personally I would not try to argue that he get rending in this way)
