I am thinking about starting a Grey Knight army and had a question about them, are they Space Marines and can I use them with a regular space marines?

Grey knights are technically space marines but they have a stand alone codex so cant be used with the regular space marine codex.

If you meant "I like the models and want to use them as normal SM." then yes.

If you meant "Can I use Grey Knights in with my normal SM." No, just like you can't use BA or SW with normal SM.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

There gene-seed is strongly suggested to be taken from the Emperor himself.

In the new codex it states that they were formed from loyal marines that didn't defect from the Traitor Legions (i.e., Iron Warriors who stayed loyal), because they were immune to the corruption of chaos or something like that. They used their gene-seed from there on, it's in the new Grey Knight codex.

The ending of the book Flight of the Eisenstein seems to show how the GK were formed, with the original members being loyalists from traitor legions, initially picked from the survivors from the Eisenstein, who brought word of Horus' betrayal to Terra, including Death Guard Captain Nathaniel Garro and Luna Wolf(he rejects the legion name 'Sons of Horus' in the book) Captain Iacton Qruze.

Hmm I must say I like the idea of loyal SM from defected chapters turned into grey knights going after their old buddies looking for revenge
Sounds cooler than just being Emperor clones if you ask me ... damn now I want to buy some GK -.-

What I was really asking is that I like the Grey Knights and I have a ton of unpainted SM and I wanted to know if I can paint the SM I have up in GK colors and use them as GK's.

That could get a little confusing. Grey Knights use a ton of special gear and weapons so having a squad on 9 bolter marines and a sergeant could cause some problems.

Honestly, I would suggest against it, for the reason noted by pen>sword. GK, though they use *some* of the same equipment, have very different standard equipment then other space marines, including their normal weapons, melee upgrades and heavy/special weapons.

Yep. If I recall, it was a bunch of Death Guard, a handful of World Eaters, and a single Thousand Son.

Sorry, no. There's just no way around it, you can't do that. It would be like painting your marines silver and saying they're necrons, or painting them orange and saying they're tyranids. Grey Knights and Space Marines are totally different, even though GK are technically SM.

On moon miranda.

They aren't really *that* different. Identical statlines, roughly same equipment, both bear bolt weapons, same Ld special rule, etc.

It'd look funky, but I doubt you'd really get any problems with it. Worst comes to worst, swap the helmets and see how many people notice.

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Well, different armor, different ranged weapon, the addition of a pretty significant close combat weapon. That covers basically all the bases.

If you can give them a force weapon or a force halberd, as well as give it a wrist-mounted stormbolter, you might be able to pass those marines off as Grey Knights. Without those crutial pieces of wargear though, they will never conform to WYSIWYG rules and you just have a bunch of Silver Skulls Marines.

I want to buy a box of Grey Knight terminators and use them as Knights of Blood (Blood Angels) Terminators. I planned on taking the extra weapons from my Assault Terminator box and kit-bashing them to the GK terminators. I wanted to use all Grey knight helmets (even on the SM terminators) for a "knight" look to go with the blood knight theme. What do you think of that? (And besides the halberds would be going on eBay for the actual grey knight players to use. Who can argue with that?

As long as the equipment conform to WYSIWYG then there really shouldnt be any issue. GK terminators seems great for BT conversions too.

LOL'd. Hard.

I asked about their primarch thinking that the absence of one could rule them out as SM, being closer to "regular" psykers in power armor.

The Emperor being gene-seed of a Chapter I heard of speaking of Custodes... Now that's a chapter I would love to know more about.

The Adeptus Custodes aren't a Chapter, nor are they Astartes at all. They are the Emperor's Honor Guard, and are above any Astartes on an individual level.

Noted, I still would love to know more about them, perhaps even some proposed stats profile for an army or allied unit/s.
