As controversial as he first part of this post may seem, yes I would indeed like to start Wood Elves army or Warriors of Chaos. Me and my friends play mostly for fun and do not concern ourselves with tournaments or whatnot. Having that in mind, I am saving for a batallion. Is that a good decision? I have read that with WoC you just need a hero or lord and you can basically have a 1k list. How are things with WE and their batallion? Will they be more expensive $$ wise? Also, I do have a small army of dwarfs, if that helps for comparison with those two armies and their differences. I am leaning towards Wood Elves, but as many will say, I can have a legal army pretty fast with WoC with minimal additional spending. So, what do you think? WE or WoC? Bare in mind we play for fun (mostly ^^) and the army should be built to be interesting/fluffy/cool to field, and not made to destroy puny souls that shiver seeing it. Thanks for any input

Well I don't know about the battalion box (because I didn't buy it), but I will say that I play Wood Elves because they are fun. They are not powerful, most will say lower rung, but they do alot of interesting things. And the models are ace.

If you want to win more, WoC is where its at, as long as you love Tzeentch warriors and Khorne marauders. I think the list is less fun than Wood Elves, but more effective.

WFB armies: Wood elves, Bretonnia, Daemons of Chaos (Tzeentch), Dwarfs & Orcs 'n Goblins
40K armies: Black Legion, Necrons, & Craftworld Iyanden

I created a 1k list for WE from just the battalion box before and I am sure you could probably do the same with the WoC battalion. You will just have to convert the models a little more to make some look more like characters. That was 7th edition though so the % limits might change it a little. I am a big fan of the WE models, but I think WoC provide more opportunities to convert and make them your own. Granted I have seen some flavorful WE armies too. I am thinking of converting up a WE army with WE and Beastmen to make them more fanciful (satyrs, centaurs, minotaurs as wardancers, wild riders, and treekin). I don't think you will be disappointed with either army.

dwarfs, wood elves, dark elves, bretonnians, WOC,
space wolves, orks, eldar

WoC can be a really fun army, you can make a pretty interesting army if you dont just spam warriors and warshines.

I took a quick trip through army building and both battalions will get you close to the 1000 points, as mentioned before, however you will need to either convert a model for your general or add in the expense of buying one into your budget. I like the look of the wood elves, but the WoC fit my play style better (get across the board and bash their heads in).

Thanks for the answers!
Anyway, I do have some money saved up and time for decisions are near. I will probably make some points comparison to see what is the best deal for me. However, WoC seem like a solid investment. I do not like Tzeentch in particular, I was aiming for more of a Undivided army. Or a pure cult one. I just don't like mix and matching so that I could have a unbeatable list.

As far as WE go, my idea was to make some sort of hell unleashing arrow army. Coupled with some solid fast cavalry to distract opponents. Don't know if that is achievable, though.

Can someone give me a link to army builder or make a rough estimate what goes in a 1000 pts army for those two armies?
