So I was looking at my Land Speeder model when a thought occured to me: do these vehicles land? Surely they can't just hover all the time, but there is no landing gear on them either. In fact, Land Speeders have a large sensor-type thing on on the bottom which would hit the ground should it try to land as-is.
Discuss.

I agree, I've always assumed they have some sort of docking cradle.
I can't remember ever reading anything that specifically states this though.

I dont think the situation has ever presented itself, for a landspeeder to land, in the history of the imperium.
Seeing as how they always get blown up turn 2

Or,it could be like the star wars speeders ( the one luke drives on tatooine ) and they float just off the ground when at a standstill and get locked down when in transit between war zones.

The "Land" in "Land Speeder" refers to Magos Land, who discovered the Land Speeder (and Land Raider) STCs.

Yeah, I believe there is some background indicating they just low hover. Practically, they never land, as Jburch points out, because they are too busy getting blown up!

There was a Golden Demon entry a good few years ago-its in the 2nd Space Marine collector's guide to my recollection too- that depicted a landed Land Speeder. It had three landing feet things(¬¬) that came out from underneath-one beneath either wing coming out of the sides and one at the front under the nose-, but honestly they probably just float there, or more practically have a landing cradle-having those anti grav pads turned on all the time is a waste of power and there's got to be some way to storethem during transport.

I love it when 40k is silly that way.
But in Brothers of the Snake, the speeder at the beginning of the book is hovering while in storage. Main character slides it out while hovering and pulls a tarp off of it.
Also see nearly the same thing at the begining of the Ultramarines movie.

A generic gun cutter like Eisenhorn's presumably. He pilots it himself so it's not a Thunderhawk or Stormraven.

yeah ive always imagined it as something generic.
however, i thought the Astartes didnt use generic transport (in so far as a Thunderhawk or Stormraven isnt generic)

I always assumed one of 3 things:
1 - it stays in low hover
2 - docking bay/cradle arrangement
3 - the sensor thing detracts into the body of the speeder

+1 internets for you sir
The stormraven was generic until it was added in BA. Plus, the one he was in would have to have been special because it had warp-travel capability, but was pretty small. Even Eisenhorn's guncutter needed larger transport to get between systems.

Maybe the TF sensor pod can swivel up to be more horizontal?
I'm betting on a cradle. Like the ones that speeder bikes use in Star Wars (when being transported). They only hover when they are powered up.

Book says they are always hoving. maybe the force that powers the ani-grav is always active (like a magnet) and you have the ability to add more power to it while the vehicle is running.

I was just looking at the ultramarines movie and in the part where the landspeeder comes out of the thunderhawk and there is seems that it just lies on the ground and the sensor thingy just moves into the bottom.
I don't know if it's a reliable sours though.

Yeah, it definitely hovers the whole time in the Ultramarines movie, even when the crew are dead!! But that also says that space marine armour is made out of some material other than ceramite (can only remember that it wasn't ceramite, but some other current substance eg titanium)
