So I figured this would be worth some degree of documentation: I have started building terrain, for the first time. I'm really getting into Mordheim of late, and am hoping to start a campaign with the local gaming club - but there's not much suitable terrain there, so I thought I'd try my hand. Below are some quick shots of what I've put together so far, with the materials I bought to test the theory, and I'm pretty happy with it - I'm going to add some more walls to the emptier pieces, chuck in some rubble etc and get them painted up.

Have any of you guys undertaken similar projects? Do you have any tips for me?

wow. that looks like a lot of work. how detailed will this be? I'm also doing a few of ruins myself. Hope to learn a lot from this.

Edges - the ruined edges of the walls attract attention since this is mostly where the models will interact with the terrain.

Debris - it's a ruin so it does not need to be clean. the problem here though is that one may get overzealous with this. I did, and I ran out of space to place models.

Texture - For this I i used fine sand and I added a bit of gradient. i.e. more sand on the lower parts and on crevasses. I also added bullet holes of varying caliber. I placed some of it near the edges, like someone was using that for cover.

Excellent work so far matey, Mordheim is an excellent game system and very fun.

The building as looking great, not much needs to happen your on the right track already.

What's the walls made from, if it's sold plasticcard (not foam board) then you could use the hot salt technique to add
damaged to the crumbling sections of brick and stone etc.

(if you not sure what that invovles I've seen a few tuts floating about
but basically you heat a bunch of rock salt and then lay the thing in it you want to damage you end up with some very nice looking breaks and chipping).

When you go to add paint or need some inspiration, have a look at some of the buildings in the MMO Warhammer Age of Reckoning (WAR) the terrain in that game is just breathtaking,
mostly the town of Praag which is a PVP zone and plays out liek a live Mordheim.

They're built out of foamcore, card, balsa wood and based with MDF. And there won't be any bulletholes. This is Mordheim! A few arrows, perhaps?

I'm going to be reasonably conservative with the debris. Only thing I'm worried about is the basecoat - the exposed foamcore edges don't react all that well to spray paint. I'm thinking of putting a few layers of watered down PVA over them to act as a rudimentary seal - painting it all by hand will be a pain in the arse.

Looks good so far, but are you going for an all stone look or are you just basecoating the wood gray due to ease?

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

It's actually primed black - the lighting is doing funny things. I'm in the midst of painting it right now. A lot of drybrushing but it's starting to look pretty cool! A lot of grey stone, but the wood will obviously be wood-coloured. I'm thinking red-ish for the tiles, too, and a few patches of static grass will finish it off nicely.

Nothing to stop you doing it yourself, squire. I've never really built terrain before, so if I can do it, you can!
