I started buying units a couple months ago, and ended up choosing Necrons.. Now I've played a couple games with them and have a much better understanding of the rules. I am a college student on a semi-tight budget and am looking for an interesting game I can spend a lot of time with long-term. I have enough money to build one 2.5-3k army but not more than that.

Anyways, I completed putting the necrons I had together, about 30 warriors, lord, and 6 destroyers and enjoyed playing them, but then I've heard from a couple people that the units would all be getting changed when the new codex comes out sometime this year. I enjoy the game as a whole, and really think I'd enjoy playing any army, period.

I don't want to have to redo my models because the ones I bought aren't good anymore. Is this how it works? I'm very new so I don't quite know what a codex change means to the army, especially since I know necrons have had the same one forever now.

I also don't think it'd be a huge deal though to sell what I have now and work on building a different army that will allow me some more consistency and stability through the next year or two though if that's better. The models look like they sell for what I paid anyways, plus I've already assembled and primed them and such.

Mostly just want general opinions on what to do, and what the codex change means to the army, and if it's something to worry about. I really like the look of some of the other armies anyways, so just not sure. Thanks in advance!

Codex updates change the rules for an army. This is sometimes accompanied by the release of new models. This does not invalidate the old models. A collection consisting of old and new models might have an inconsistent appearance and a few options might change in the updates but the basic models will almost certainly remain legal to use.

Most times anyhow.

There have been instances of units being removed from a codex, but it sounds like the ones you have are core units (which i don't see goiing away) Lords are THE necron hq (ignoring Ctan for now) and will always be, warriors are the basic (and currently only) troops choice, so no chance of them vanishing, and Destroyers are the iconic Necron Fast Attack, and nice plastic models to boot. They're likely staying.

Frankly, the necrons are way low on choices comapred to modern dexes, so they'd be far more likely to be adding stuff than removing it

New rules, same models, likely new extra models too.

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Okay that makes me feel better.. The army I'm working for and going to be playing is mostly destroyers, warriors, lord, and then maybe some immortals.

I see what you mean about there being so few unit choices for them anyways so that they may only add. This was what lured me into start looking at them as a beginner.. Let me not get too confused about what does what and how to outfit them. Some of the space marine chapters were a bit overwhelming to look at.

Thank you.
