The exact words are: the vanguard sargeant may replace his sword with a thunder hammer. So, with the entry above stating vanguard models can replace pistol and/or chainsword with a storm shield, is this combo illegal, or does he just miss +1 attack? The reason I ask is because I was told thunder hammers are two handed.

Any model can change out a bolt pistol for a stormshield.

Is the sergeant a model?

I'm not sure I'm understanding. The Vanguard Sergeant can replace his bolt pistol with a storm shield (or a thunderhammer) and he can replace his power sword for a thunderhammer.

The net result is the sergeant can take either 2 Thunderhammers or 1 Thunderhammer and 1 Storm Shield.

A regular Vanguard can replace either his bolt pistol or chainsword for a Thunderhammer and then the remaining bolt pistol/chainsword he didn't replace he can then replace for the Storm Shield.

So yes, regular Vanguards can take Thunderhammer & Storm shields and so can the Sergeant.

If you give him a hammer, he can't get a +1A bonus unless the 2nd ccw is also a hammer, so you may as well give him the shield to go with it.

Ok so just one more thing. Assault squad sarge trooper cannot do the same as it has: replace the sergeants bolt pistol/chainsword meaning you can only take 1 not 2 options?

I setup my normal assault sergeant with a power axe and a storm shield, i think it is legal.......
