Ok ill make it quick with a "far fetch" exemple but still entirely possible.

On one side you 20 hormagaunts, 19 of them entirely behind a ruin (in cover with no LoS) and a single one in the open.
On the other side are 20 ork boyz all having a clear LoS only to the sole hormagaunt in the open.

Let say the orks all hit, all wound and somehow the gaunts manage to fail all their saves (4+ from beeing behind concrete wall). That would lead to an entire brood of 20 gaunts to be wiped even if only 1 was visible, i'm i correct?

This is the wrong forum, and no, on those visible can die, so only one would die, the rest would be unharmed and the shots wasted.

Incorrect in this version.

P24 "Note that any model in the target unit can be hit, wounded and taen off as a casualty, even mmodels that are completely out of sight or and of range of all the firers."

This was a very deliberate change to remove the range and LoS sniping that 4th edition allowed. (where you could force certain models in the target unit to be removed - e.g. by blocking LoS to the rest of the squad using a vehicle)

Really? I still get mixed up with 5th ed and 4th ed, so many rules and it's easy to forget which version they come from.

Yep, any of them could be removed as casualties. As Scott said, this was brought in specially after 4th, where people were using tanks as mobile cover.

It used to be that you couldn't kill models that were out of sight. So people would position a rhino or two so that they could only see the IC in a unit and then shoot the hell out of him (he gets all the wounds since you can't see the others).

You could do the same thing by getting yourself just barely in range although this was harder.

It also meant that it could be extremely important where in the squad certain models are which tended to slow things down.

In 5th Edition, yes, the entire brood would be wiped out by ork shooting. That being said, if only ONE model was visible, I'd be giving you a 3+ save instead of the 4+ save, so it'd be incredibly unlucky.

The idea behind being able to kill everyone is that, while only one can be fdirectly seen, it would be IDIOTIC to assume he is on his own - especially with the sound of others moving behind him, etc, giving the game away.

It also prevents the annoyance of rhino parking. OOps, sorry, gues you lost that powerfist, now eat dreadnought to face....

Worth pointing out that this isn't supported by the rules - it's a generous and sporting thing to do but you don't have to.

The hits apply to the whole unit but you get a very nice cover save. I think it's a 4+ cover save if over half the unit is in cover or out of los, didn't know anything about a 3+.

The sporty thing to do would be to not abuse this bit of a rule and dont shoot the unit in the first place =P (personally I think it's rather unrealistic that one squad member outside of a wall would get his entire unit killed).

Laughing again, how was that trolling mecha? He seriously made me laugh by bringing up realistic and 40k rules in the same post.

The rules even give fluff as to why models completely out of LoS can be killed by shooting attacks...

I just imagine that one gaunt gets shot, then his inquisitive friend comes over to ask him if he's ok. Then he gets shot, then his friend comes over to check it out and so on and so on.

The fact that you didnt even realise it's me in both cases kinda reinforces my idea that you're just trolling =P

@ asimo77: Now that actually makes me laugh, both at the hilarious situation, and the fact that I can see it happening. o.0 (then again, the Hive mind might just be telling them to fill his gap).

It's even funnier when you imagine the Emprah's finest, the SM doing it. Or even GK and the "wise" Eldar.

However with Orks can't imagine them doing anything else. "Oi whyz dere a ole in iz ead? Iz betta go an chek it out *BLAM*"
