I like the imperial guard models, but i don't want to start a whole new army. with this in mind, what codex would work best out of these: space marines, orks, tyranids, dark eldar, or chaos space marines?
here are some things that i can think of for the various armies:

space marines: scout army

orks: mechanized?

tyranids: possible rebels of some kind, i have a whole list somewhere for a genestealer cult that i wanted to try, but never got around to...

dark eldar: kabalites? flying thingies? servitors as wracks, etc? this could work...

chaos: probably not...

so, what do you think?

Space Marines. Scouts with their skimpy armor are about as close to IG as you can get with the races described. Anything else and your opponent might have trouble remembering who is what.

well, i would probably have a printout thingy describing what's what. i think that i'll go with a genestealer cult, with guardsmen as termagants (dressed as cultists, and with shotguns, of course), and transport vehicles as tervigons, battle tanks as tyrannofexes, stuff like that. also, i already have some of those ideas on paper. i am open to ideas, however.

I'm not quite sure what you want to do here. You want new guardsmen models, but dont want to start a new army, and yet your still using a horde list?

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

well, i really just want an excuse to buy some new models, and i already have so many ideas for a genestealer cult army. the heavy weapons teams would represent biovores, etc, the psykers could be the zoanthropes (magus) sentinel for some monstrous creatures, and i can find a good bit of this on the dakka swap shop! this could work...

edit: though dark eldar could work too, as the guardsmen look sort of like kabalites, and i could make... FLYING TANKS!!!1!!!1!!11!ONE
sentinel could be a talos, ogryns for grotesques, servitors for wracks... i could make a mechanicus army! i have always wanted to do that...

would love to, but i have a lot of armies already, and i just started fantasy. i just seem to have modeller's add, or something. plus, i can't imagine paying more for a dark eldar counts as admech army that i would for an imperial guard admech army. does anyone disagree with this, because i want to know what i'm doing before i start this.

Actually, chaos would be your best bet here.

They're traitor guardsmen who got sucked into the warp which mutated all the 3's in their statlines to 4's. The chaos gods continue to sustain their super-human abilities, even though, at first glance, they just look like regular people.

Just paint some Guardsmen up for fun then. If you feel like painting more later, you can think about making an army. If you pulled out an IG army and told me it was Dark Eldar, I can't think of many players who wouldn't give you a confused stare.
