Recently there has been an increase of new players at my FLGS, orks being included in AOBR are a popular choice and I find ork vs. ork games rather boring so I decide to start a second army to change things up. After picking up the guard codex I came up with two different lists and I would appreciate any opinions on them.

For the first list each infantry squad with a commissar blobs up with a infantry squad without a commissar to form 4 20-man blobs which will move towards the enemy and attempt to charge them. One thing I was considering was removing the russ sponsons so they came lumber along with the rest of the army, one thing I don’t like about this list is the lack of str 6-7 for transport hunting I guess the two HW squads will help but I’m not sure that it will be enough.

The second list seems to be the opposite with all the multi lasers, auto cannons, and plasma it can hopefully knock out transports rather quickly but it doesn’t seem to have as much heavy anti amour, would it be worth it to change the CCS plasma guns to meltas and maybe use the extra points to pick up a regimental advisor (the OOTF is looking attractive due to all the local blood angle players). I also like this list for the variety of the models that it includes.

So dakka what do list do you think is better?

both lists are good, but i would take the second.

don't think, you have to know it if you want to be a commander
2010-> IG losses:5, draws: 1, wins: a really lot of wins
2011 IG losses: 2, draws: 1 wins: 32
2012 losses: 8, draws: 0 wins: 15

Hmmm I'm not too keen on 20 man blobs, 30 man ones are much more survivable. I also do not know how effective plasma sponson vanilla russes are, never see that combination. I like the 2nd one a bit more.

Agree. if you go for blobs then 2 squads of 30. Points saved can stick a priest in one of those blobs.

HS slots need some work in list 1 as well - I would maybe trim the plasma sponsons and then try to squeeze 2 hydras into the list.

You can drop the regimental standard for a further melta and maybe drop the melta for a GL in some of the infantry squads.

On second list, I am not sure of dual demolisher and their 24" range. You have plenty of autocannons etc that can blow transports but not so much on heavy armour. As such, those HS slots need to be able to dent AR 12, 13, 14 and preferably on T1 which is why I'm less keen on demolishers. Stick some vendettas in there with TL las and then the demolishers may well work ...

List 2 is the best, for ilst 1 meltas on foot aren't going to get you any where.

Demolishers are cool and can advance with the Chimeras but Manticores have rate of fire power and truely kick arse for 5 points less.

thanks for all the input guys I think that i'll use the second list. What would be a good replacment for the demolishers? Would medusas with baston breachers they could help with the long range anti tank if they can hit, or would a differant russ variant suffice, I do like the manticore but the AP4 wouldn't help aginst marines. I agree with the fact that the army needs more AT and I understand that the vendetta is probably the best place to get it any thoughts?

Don't worry about the AP on Manticores. All you need is several blasts to hit a squad of Marines and they will be dead or cut down due to weight of wounds. Manticore will wound on a 2+ and Blood Angels for example will not get the funky feel no pain because double toughness. Plus you can get for vehicles too and mass infantry.

For 130 points the Vendetta is probably the best anti tank unit in the Imperial Guard codex.

Ok I'm going to drop the demolishers for manticores. I was thinking of ways to fit 2 vendettas and I came across the idea of dropping the hydras to replace the meltavet chimeras with vendettas would this be a good idea? I would lose two vehicles but I could get my melta vets in faster with the scout move and I would think that 6 TL Las that can fire at two different targets would be an improvement over 4 TL ACs.
