I just started playing orks about 4 months ago, after being introduced to 40k early last year.
The friend who got me into 40k basically handed me a big box of orks he wasn't going to use
as a present. It included:
The Black Reach Ork set (Warboss with PK, BP, Cybork. Plus 20 slugga boyz x 2 w/ big shootas, 5 nobz and 3 deffkoptas w/ tl rokkit)
2 boxes of boyz
2 boxes of gretchin
One meganob with kombi-skorcha
A second warboss with mega-armor and bp
And a Weirdboy

I'm looking to make a decent 1000p army to play with while I decide on a theme for higher point games.
I know I've seen an army sort of like this around when I was researching(possibly on this forum). I tooled around with it a bit and got

HQ
Warboss
Mega-armor, bp, cybork
115

Warphead
85
Total: 200

Troops:

4x Meganobz
all w/ kombi-skorchas
180

19x slugga boyz
Nob w/ pk and bp
19x slugga boyz
Nob w/ pk and bp
308

14x Gretchin
1x Runtherd
52
Total: 540

Elites:
5x Lootaz
5x Lootaz
150

Dedicated Transport for Meganobz:
Battlewagon
RPJ
Grot Riggers
Bigshoota x2
110

Total Points: 1000

the person I play with most is also a newb and a sm player. I know he's gonna start fielding a Predator with lascannon and heavy boltor sponsons, and he's scared of shiny meganobs though I
know they really aren't all that. Moreso if I'm taking flack from his devastator squad right out of the gate. I anticipate my battlewagon is going to be ill-fated most of the time.

I know my real option from here is to replace the Warphead with a KFF (I'll buy one eventually). Are there any other
tweaks I should consider? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Sounds like a prettty good, only one tank, so if he's got any anti-tank its all gonna be shootin at your battlewagon.
You also might want to combine the two squads of lootas into one, otherwise if you loose 2 lootas you gotta take a leadership check, and with ork ld... then ur lootas are useless and running, and can't shoot their heavy weapons. Although with two squads you have the option to shoot at two different things. so Since your just playing ur friend I guess it's up to you. If he has nothing that even gets close to them then keep them as two, but if your playing anyoneelse, put them in one squad.

Also, your troop slots are a little low, I'd consider adding more boyz up to 30, unless your putting them in a wagon, as you go up in points. You should be fine for 1000 with the troops your using. But: use the gretchin either as a shield for everything else, or stick them in the back on an objective, and in cover. Use the meganobz to take out the tough units, or anything big, then end of game get back in their wagon and get to an objective to capture or at least contest. Boyz just run up the feild they're the core of your army.

Hope that helps

Try to stick a deffrolla on that battlewagon. Deffrollas are AWESOME.

Thanks very much for the feedback guys.
I'm definately looking to up my boyz count as I raise my points levels.
I just have one question on if/when I have a KFF to field in this sort of army.

Is it still good to run a sizeable gretchin herd with the KFF or will those points be essential for beefing up whatever Kans or Deffs I go about fielding with him?

I'd be wary of taking a single transport in to battle.
Any player worth their klaw will focus fire on it first round and then your Meganobs will be slowly and purposefully slogging through a rain of fire all the way to the Kill Points bucket.
If you are going to take movers, take a few to force your enemy to split his fire.

I would leave the lootas the way they are, 5 each.

That way if you lose 2 you make a leadership test. Fail it, and you probably will, and you only lose 3 lootas.

If you combine them to 10 and then lose 3, you have to take the same test. Chances are you will fail it and boom, there goes not three, but seven lootas.

Stick with 2 squads of five.

Oh, and cap out the boyz squads at 30. I play a Kan Wall variant and despite how awesome those meganobz SOUND, i can tell you from experience that a full squad of boyz with a hidden PK Nob is not only harder to bring down, but will earn back its points and then more 95% of the time.

Do not underestimate the power of a full boyz squad
