There's something that's been bothering me for a while ever since I watched the Ultramarines movie -- it struck me as wrong how the younger space marines constantly disrespected the venerable apothecary in that film. It seems to me that space marines would have respect for older, more experienced members of the chapter. Further, it seems to me that there would be disciplinary consequences for such disrespect. As such, I found the constant banter of the marines in the film odd. Once the fighting started this all melted away and I enjoyed the movie much more -- but is this really the way space marines behave? Is this just Ultramarines?

I liked the way Graham McNeill portrayed the Imperial Fists in Storm of Iron much more. Seems to me that the ultimate warriors would be more stoic and disciplined in the fashion McNeill portrays them rather than the loud-mouthed insubordinate braggarts of Abnet's portrayal.

its the way young cocky marines act.

you have to put it in context, they were initiates a week before the movie takes place.

I viewed most of it as playful banter with a few real digs at the Apothecary that were born out of wanting some real action.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

The movie is even wrong about the Ultramarines
Graham Mcneil also wrote the Ultramarine series, i believe this would be a correct potrayal, of the rigid Chapter that follows the words of Codex Astartes

I liked the movie.

it was the first portrayal where Ultramarines weren't a bunch of tightwads. actually gives them some character.

@Grey Templar - I love your sig re: Grey Knights.

I, too, liked the movie, and I own it. I just thought the behaviour of the marines was a bit odd. Aren't they SUPPOSED to be tightwads? I mean, I recognise the necessity of giving them some character to make the movie enjoyable, but some of the banter seemed over the top to me and the comments towards the apothecary just plain mean-spirited and detrimental to a true esprit de corps.

Eye of Terra.

I personally don't see the Ultramarines the way they were portrayed in the movie. Uriel Ventris, a seasoned warrior, was sent on an 'expedition' into the eye of terror for a codex infraction. I don't see the Ultras allowing any kind of cockyness at all, in fact, if they carry the genes of their primarch I would imagine it's nigh on impossible.

Back in the old days, marines were viewed more as the stereotypical 'grunt' for lack of a better description. Men of few words except where those words could be 'spit-yelled' while cresting a breach in the line chain-sword in hand.

Most marine are far more 'thoughtful' and sedate as they slaughter the enemy now.

The thing is that, over the thousands of yeas, the geneseed gets diluted.

each marine adds his own human genes to his progenoids. and the marines that recieve the gens from his progenoids will also add his genes.

during/before the heresy, most marines were indistinguishable from each other(only marines could tell each other apart) and they were nearly identical to their primarch. but th gene dilution over the years has allowed marines to retain their own superficial genetic features as well as personaility quirks.

I also must admit i found them to be slightly juvenile and disrespectful to their superiors in that movie, not how i would have imagined the strict regimented soldiers of the adeptus astartes to behave, initiates or not, just because you haven't been a marine for long doesn't mean you can be a jackass! in fact I would have imagined them being 'chewed out' more by the captain and apothecary to mold them into the 'grunt' albeit a super grunt at that.
My take on the marines is that they respect the military order of rank (as they should) there may be banter between brothers but it's more of a 'brotherly love' kind of ribbing that they do, and a repect between all of them as soldiers, take Ian Watsons 'Space Marine' novel, three warring hive kids from different hab levels become space marines and even though they war with each other in the past they blossom into a friendship that gets stronger as the novel progresses, great book, one of my favorites by far! and how i imagine the marines would behave as initiates and fellow full battle brothers! if you haven't read it, do yourself a favor and find it and have a read ;-)

He's not a dick. He's just misunderstood. He's really a swell guy... just don't 'bend' the codex.

They had the kind of attitude of the younger marines in Flight of the Eisenstein.

What really bothered me about the movie was that not ONCE did anyone ever reload their bolters. You see a half animation at the beginning in the armory of a mag being slapped in, but that's all. Not to mention, none of the marines hold their weapon left-handed either.

It's only one squad. It doesn't seem unlikely at all that there'd be no lefties in there. When I was in the army, in my platoon, there were only 2 or 3 lefties so we definitely had full 10-man sections shooting right.

Indeed they are. Thought that would be represented. Didn't dig on the older marines looking geriatric either. I could see some grey hair and wrinkles, but age spots? Really? Trade those in for some scars.

YES! that bothered the hell out of me. As for the Eisenstein marines, maybe this is something more unique to HH, because the initiates in Descent of Angels were nigh on Narcisistic at times.

That's the exception though because that book was an unforgivable turd.
