Giving anything in the IG army a bolt pistol. You basically make rolling for shooting more annoying and give yourself stupid uneven points, for what amounts to a pretty rubbish firepower increase.

Adrenal Glands, Toxin sacs and Crushing Claws on a Carnifex. This effectively neuters two of the Fex's special rules and makes his strength (the only reason you'd be taking him) pointless.

But then you can re-roll your wounds!! OoOoOoOoOoO!

Edit: I was always partial to giving a Chaos Rhino Extra Armor and Deamonic Possession.

A rhino with Daemonic Possession (or Parasitic possession, forgot which one) in the last edition. It made the Rhino unable to transport troops, effectively killing it's purpose and you got a BS3 but near-indestructable Combi Bolter.

The Tau command and control node, ten full points of doing literally nothing in 5th edition has to win the thread. Or almost as good, why not try out the advanced stabilisation system for XV8s, reduce your movement to give you a USR you already have? Count me in! It is however very useful for XV88s, so it isn't all bad.

Don't forget the frag spines. Useful on their own, but devestating in combination with Crushing Claws.

Not totally stupid, but you shouldn't use a pintle stormbolter on an IG vehicle. It is at best equal and at worst badly inferior to the heavy stubber that costs the same amount. Upgrade everything but your command squads with vox casters. Platoon standards - while they do in fact do something it's a fairly silly thing they do for an awful lot of points, at least by Guard standards. The older book had a lot more. Honorifica on a heroic senior officer, medallion crimson on single wound model, master vox on a Ld8 HQ, master vox with no vox casters, just off the top of my head.

That was the second special rule I was talking about, although it's really more of a biomorph now that you mention it.

I wasn't meaning that vox casters are only useful on command squads. I meant that it is useless to take vox casters on every squad in your army that has the option except for your command squads, an idea so preposterous I have only seen one person try to do it.

Jump packs for Vanguard Vets.

"wait, Vanguard vets are 6 points more expensive than an assault marine, and they don't have anything different?"

"they don't have jump packs"

"so the jump packs are free right?"

"10 points each"

"(insert every expletive in the book here)"

However, I think that the command and control node for Tau takes the cake. It does nothing in 5th edition. Like there is not a single thing it does. Never will you use a C&C node.

Toxin sacs on most of the big stuff. Except for the tervigon, it's a bad idea.

Spike rifles or spinefists on gants. They're worse and more points. Strangleweb sucks too.

I think stikkbombs on any orks is not a good usage of points. It has a few select times when they'll be helpful but you usually strike last anyways.

Record:

8th edition:
Tyranids: 5-4-3
Orks: 4-2-1

5th edition

Orks:18-5-1
Tyranids: 17-10-4

6th edition

Tyranids: 6-4-1
Orks: 3-1-0

what about terminators (of the not lighting claw variety)? Granted why you would ever find terminators in cover is beyond me, but that would definetly be useful.

Or how about when charging Guard in cover? Would you rather they get to lay into you first?

A stormbolter on an IG vehicle. You can get a S4 AP5 assault 2 24" gun, or a S4 AP6 heavy 3 36" gun with the heavy stubber for the same points. If you do the mathhammer, that extra shot makes up the difference in AP just fine against 5+ save guys, and the added range and weight of fire make it better against everything else.

Gun Drones on a Hammerhead/Skyray. 20pts for two BS2 TL pulse carbines that may disengage and form a single unit that doesn't score but gives a KP if destroyed (with the vehicle worth another it destroyed later). If the vehicle is destroyed and the drones survive the crash, then they form a unit in the same way as if disengaging.

20pts To give your opponent a free kill point.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

+1, I was thinking the same thing exactly

Also, Photon grenades for Fire Warriors. Lolwut? I get to pay to have my fire-warriors stay in close combat longer and get roflpwned slightly slower??
Taking photon grenades (in all but extremely rare circumstances) will make enable the enemy to go into combat, you may survive 1 turn with this upgrade, and then your unit gets pasted on you turn, in time for the enemy to assault another unit without being shot at. Count me in!
