So getting into 40k and trying to find the army that feels right for me.

I really dont want to just sit back and shoot the entire game, as I hate that playstyle and prefer a get in their face with supporting fire while you advance.

So im really after a more combat oriented army with supporting fire to help deal with tanks and "soften" units.

Really like the look of the eldar codex, fluff is cool and I like the models, but keep seeing the "take mechanized and shoot them" whenever someone makes a list.

Also dont say orks, do not like the look and feel of the army.

Space Wolves might be a good diea...
Fairly decent at CC (Though ot powerhouses so watch out)
Undercosted Long Fangs gives you pretty damn good supporting fire.
Starting to sound like a one-track record...

Slaanesh CSM. Noise Marines are, in my opinion, the most underrated units in that codex. Even while moving, they get a ton of shots. Yeah, not a lot of AP3 stuff for marines, but with 20 bolter shots after the move, or 30 stationary, marines WILL die.

They also have the doom siren (Heavy Flamer with AP3, and assault) as well as I5. Against marines you can just soften 'em up and just assault and finish them off.

The only reason why I would NOT recommend this army to start is that it's expensive, and the hybrid metal-plastic kits for Noise Marines are a pain in the ass. (Not to mention ONE kit has ONE sonic blaster, nullifying the purpose of taking them, and that you have to shell out even more money to get one legit Noise Marines squad.)

.... Now that I think of it, CSM might be a good way to go for you. (Yeah I'm kinda biased )

sounds like you want space wolves. Grey hunters are solid in combat, long fangs are a dirt cheap fire support unit, and they have lots of fun toys.

Unless you really love an army, start with marines.

Well we're going to need more info on what you like. Space Wolves can fit any build you're looking for, but every army has several ways for things to get into assault with supporting fire.

Do you want the assault units to be fast and durable. Or super aggressive with weaker armor. Do you want a powerful gun line composed of infantry or tanks?

Everyone on Dakka recommends the most competitive list ever, because why would you want suggestions on it if the list isn't going to compete in anything. The easiest way to be effective is with full mech eldar, but there are tons of other builds out there which can be just as good. Your best chance of winning a tournament with Eldar is defiantly full mech, but it's not the only way.

What this list needs is synergy. Maybe drop 1 of the hearld for the bluescribes. You can use Pavane of Slaanesh to put units in the perfect formation to get destroyed by flamers.
