so I just got a bunch of Russian troops but I only have GW paints, and I don't know what would look good

I would recommend picking up the Russian FoW paint kit, it has the majority of colors your going to need as well as a handy painting guide on the back.

You can also look for the Russian "Art of War" book put out by Battlefront.
