Hello Dakka! My search-fu has failed and I need some help.
I have the bits (dread bodies, arms and a plethora of autocannons) to make Riflemen dreadnoughts. What I need is a little inspiration. I can easily order the FW ones, moneys isn't a big issue here. Problem is, is I don't like the over/under style, I want a side by side look.
Has anyone here made one with a side by side (on each earm) approach to the autocannons? Pics would be awesome, and some ideas on how you dealth with the ammo feeds.
I have a healthy collection of plactic tubing available also.
Cheers,
JO

the problem is that it creates a wide target, hence the attractiveness of the over/under. what if each arm was "articulated" and both AC's were mounted on an arm which could lift and swivel? Lets think of a cartesian coordinate grid. The arm of the guns tilts along XY and XZ axis, while the socket these are mounted to move along YZ axis Ammo hoppers located on the back of the YZ swivel parts, with belt feeds, or alternatively, a bulked-up engine component with added ammuniton space and belts feeding out of there

I like this!
you could make the model easier to paint by opening it up a little - put an ammo hopper on the back with a servo arm, like the marine missile launcher setup?

I don't see why you couldn't if you were skilled enough to model this?

its mostly an inspiration issue. There arent many instances of side-to side mounts of autocannons, most are vertical. I can understand the challenge. Im thinking you should look at the leman russ exterminator variant--the one with autocannons. If money is not an issue, then getting a pair of those and building out from there might be an idea. Otherwise, stare it down, draw up a reference of how you could convert it, and one-up it. Im talking just the mantlet and the guns. If I did this, i would run it from an Ironclad chassis, and incorporate a signum into/over each weapon mount, to give it the character/story that the operator used to be a devastator. I would replace its engine with a combination of defiler smoke-stack and sentinel engine, just so that there is more space to create a convincing hopper. just did some more searching. Alternative starting points include using the chaos terminator autocannons, or the autocanons from the defiler. The defiler cannons are already side-to side dealies, so the only challenge is mouning them on a frame/arm and modifying the ammo feeds. Hope I helped you at least a little bit. edited for grammar and spelling.

How about this, model a pair on top of the dread itself. On the sarcaphogus not shoulders and the other 2 are arm mounted, one on each arm. Use the jointed arm and mount the single autocannon underslung on each arm.
So in the end you have 2 top mounted and 2 underslung arm mounted autocannons. Similar to Stone Rhino (Behemoth) Battlemech

This idea has merit...
Also, poda_t I'm gonna draw up some rough sketches of what you recommended. I have the bits you referenced...i'll see if I can mock something up...

I've seen people do side by side lascannons before, using Land Raider lascannons. It looks really bad, since you make an already stubby model look way too wide.
