Sure it's all well and good to feature space marines in the game. They are large brutish humans that can cause some serious damage. However, it's annoying to me that it tends to always focus on the damn space marines. Here's what I think would be a neat layout.
Ch. 1 - Orks invade, player starts as space marine. Due to toughness and basic ease of gameplay, the player learns how to play the game.
Ch. 2 - The player continues to play as space marine. Upgrades weapon/armor. Finds other space marines to fight beside.
Ch. 3 - Difficulty ramps up, tougher opponents start to emerge (Kans, Meganobs, etc.). At some point the character is nearly overwhelmed, but a strange lightning storm quickly gathers overhead and lays waste to the whole area.
Ch. 4 - Players take the roll of an Eldar Farseer as she walks away from a nearby vantage point as the eldritch storm ravages the area. Equipped with a Singing spear, shiruken pistol, and eldritch abilities, the player then proceeds to kill orks while being informed via vox or the like that something needs to be activated so that home can be saved. Player is kept in the dark regarding the finer details.
Ch. 5 - Player spots the original space marines, and through vox it is revealed that the storm was directed to save them, not kill them. Eldar player activates what she came for, then heads for means of escape off the planet.
Ch. 6 - Player takes control of Lictor that responded to the beacon the eldar activated. After cleaving through some orks, you run into chaos space marines. Eventually player runs into original space marines.
Ch. 7 Player takes control of original space marine again, starts the level fighting the lictor. Space marines discover that the beacon is bringing the nids to the planet. They head for it to shut it down. On the way fighting orks, chaos space marines, and nids as spores begin to fall from the sky. When they arrive at the beacon they encounter the ork warboss. After defeating him they destroy the beacon, discover it's too late.
Ch. 8 Marines make their way through large groups of orks, nids, and chaos space marines fighting to get to escape shuttle. Final boss is a hive tyrant.
Ending - The marines escape the planet, inform inquisition, exterminatus occurs.
Beat the game on normal unlocks the "arena". Play as different characters and survive as long as possible. Earn enough points and you unlock more characters to use. Final bonus character can be a carnifex.
Beat the game on hard unlocks the bonus chosen campaign, where players play the role of the chaos space marines, and learn why they are on the planet.
Plot holes everywhere to be sure, but they could be worked out. To me this sounds better than playing as a space marine the entire game and just fighting orks and chaos.
