I just got my hands on the Horus Heresy Artbook and am absolutely enamoured by the Pre-heresy Thousand Sons. With the new GK codex (and thus a crapload of able-bodied psykers) would it be much more fluffy to use this instead of Space Wolves to represent a Thousand Sons army? Incidentally, the armour of the PAGKs and TAGKs matches that of the thousand sons neatly too (in terms of the carved runes, not the helmets and, in the case of terminators, shoulderpads).

I feel like Purgation units are fairly fluffy for the Pre-heresy Thousand Suns. Astral Aim seems to be a thousand Sons kinda thing.

The Librarian would be a good pick as well with all kinds of crazy powers.

The Greu Knights seem a little hand to hand based for Thousand Sons, but it would work out okay I guess.

You'd have to do a tonne of conversion work, but if you did it right, it would fit well with the gameplay and it would look amazing.

What character would best fit Ahriman? I would imagine i'd only field Magnus as Draigo, but he seems kinda inappropriate for low point costs.

Ahriman would do well as a pumped up Librarian. Mastery level 3, MC stave, all the fixings.

Conversion wise, I might use a blend of CSM (with the chaos symbols trimmed off), GKs (for Purifiers) DA bodies (for Justicars and Knight of Flames). For helmets, Chaos Warrior helms seems to be good enough. Failing that I can just modify a helm and cast it.

I was thinking of that too, but even Magnus shouldnt be the stature of a Daemon prince just yet...

I thinks it's a great idea.

The codexes are watered down for game balance so there is no need to worry about being overpowered.

As for the game figures, the Thousand Sons are easily recognized by their helmets. Plopping a Thousand Son head on a new Grey Knight fig might work.

Currently I've been building up my other army lists I've written up (to use up the models I had sitting around) but I've been craving a conversion project for quite a while. I think I might go with an Athenean Cult Terminator army, led by Ahriman (as per Fafnir's suggestion). It would be awesome but anything but practical.

EDIT: I wont be buying heads. This is gonna be my year-long project >:3

Oh wow, good luck...lol.

BTW, if you mean the Khopesh blades I think they'd work nicely.

The blades are the ones that come on Chariots. I have a sizable Tomb King Chariot fleet as well.

Reading up on the cults, I'm fascinated with the Pyrae Cult. Purifiers led by Crowe seems to be perfect for this. I can also include Techmarines leading Servitors, since the cult seems to like automata. The only problem is, there is no good analogue for Crowe, as everyone else in the cult wields some form of force weapon.

You know, I found this image online and with the exception of the Sorcerer leading the pack, the rest of the marines look a lot like forge worlds Mk III figs.

Don't know how to interpret it. I think the Helmet crests are for the leaders pre-heresy and leaders/sorcerers of the Ahriman cult and rubric marines post heresy.

Magnus was a towering figure, even before he became a Daemon Prince.

I thought of this a while back (before the codex was annouced) and did a trial conversion using Maxmini heads and metal GKs:

I will eventually return to the idea, using the new plastics.

@ Kan: I have enough problems swallowing Mephiston and Cassius as is. Primarchs are tougher than normal marines, but I draw the line at T6 and trygon-size.

@ Uhlan: I like the Athanean look of the Thousand Sons posted above, and will likely go with that interpretation. I dont particularly like the MKIII armors, and they're kinda expensive (since I need to add on a box of GKs for the stormbolters and force weapons). =x

Primarchs are tougher...to an extent.

But with Magnus, the big thing to remember is that he has been described as kind of 'appearing to tower over his Brother Primarchs'.

As for the "carved runes", I hate to say it--but they don't really fit with the Thousand Sons. I'd suggest filing them off or filling them in, and then actually putting real runes on there.

I'd rather go with Karamazov in that case. a Dread Knight seems far too big to be Pre-heresy Magnus. Post heresy maybe, the thought did cross my mind. I picked Draigo because out of the three he's the only one with Eternal Warrior. A Primarch shouldnt be padokadonk'd by a force weapon. In anycase, i dont want the primarch appearing at all anyhow, since this army likely wont get past 1000 points.

Speaking of which, any suggestions for a character to count as Crowe?

Also, the rules are similar here:

The runes match the ones on the GK legs in the top left corner and the bottom right corner, in position at least:

These will probably be limited to just Justicars since I wanna go with the Athanean style, which consist mostly of robes anyways. However if anyone can find images of Pyrae Cult Sons, I'll try to match that as close as possible.

In that image I posted above with the 1K Sons on Prospero I believe the Magnus we see is not intended to be the real magnus but an image superimposed to show that these are 'his' children... so-to-speak and they march in his name.

If you get my drift.

It depends on the artist in question. I have an image of Magnus (minus the Edward sparkles) beside two Terminators (with one in front of him and one behind). He's roughly twice their height, making him roughly the same as a Daemon Prince, but not a Dread Knight.

Well, it's all open for interpretation. I prefer my primarchs a bit smaller, say 1.5 times a marine in termie armor.
