Hello. For about six months now I've been keeping a project log on another forum as I built up this army. Now it's finished and finally time for the 1000pt army group shots and I wanted to share them with you. I'm immensely proud of this lot. It's not going to win any Golden Demon awards for sure, but it represents a huge milestone in my hobby career: my second fully painted army. For Orar!

I haven't gone through and named the strike force or any of the characters yet, but the tanks have callsigns. Let me introduce you to the guys.

Sons of Orar, 4th Company Strike Force

HQ: Librarian

Elites: Dreadnought

Troops: Tactical Squad A

Troops: Tactical Squad B

Rhino Transports: Ares and Perses

Fast Attack: Land Speeders

Heavy Support: Deimos and Phobos

Here's a few more group pictures, with tank naming and number conventions, plus a full posed army shot.

Yay!

Extremely clean paint job, very nice and not overdone highlights too. It looks like all of the vehicles are brand new, or just recently painted. The odd paint chip or two wouldn't hurt, but I can't complain at all about your paint scheme. Well done!

Very crisp red, and the high lighting you did brings out a lot on them.

Bright red is hard to paint good but you have done it well! I hope you are growing your army. Now its quite small but who cares! WERY GOOD JOB!

If I'm able to, I like to undercoat and paint the white pieces separately first, before assembly. Everything else gets basecoated with Army Painter red primer. Shoulder Pads, Rhino Doors, Predator Sponsons, etc are all done this way. After the white basecoat, I use layers of heavily watered down Fortress Grey for shading. Other white areas part of the model (Chest aquilas etc) get done in Codex Grey > Fortress Grey > Skull White. Simple really.

Thanks! That clean, crisp and 'straight off the Strike Cruiser' look is what I was going for. This army is, if you will, in "pre-battle" condition -- rolling on their way to war. Appreciate what you're saying though, and to some extent I agree. Some battle damage on the vehicles would look nice, but then they wouldn't really fit in with the infantry and ruin the coherency of the paint job a little I think. There's an already excellent Orar army done in that beaten up style, I didn't want to step on his toes

Thank you. Eventually I hope to double it in size (2000pts), but that's the next milestone and will probably take a while, assuming I don't get distracted with a new project before then!

Sure thing. I tend to spray my models in pieces before assembly, dividing them between red, white and black undercoats. Makes everything much easier to paint when you're not trying to get into all the awkward nooks and crannies. What I do is, using paperclips for wire, attach all the separate pieces to corks. For example, in the case of Tactical marines; body, head and arms on one cork, shoulder pads on one cork and boltgun on another.

Red:
1. Basecoat with Army Painter Pure Red primer.
2. Wash the entire thing with Baal Red wash
3. Wash the deep recesses (between joints, etc) with Devlan Mud
4. Armour plates in P3 Khador Red (aka Blood Red) leaving some gaps for the darker Baal Red
5. Edge highlight with Blazing Orange

White:
1. White primer basecoat
2. Wash only the recesses with heavily watered down Fortress Grey
3. Skull White tidy up and edge highlight if necessary

If the white is on something I sprayed red, such as chest eagles and whatnot, it goes Codex Grey > Fortress Grey > Skull White. Easy.

Close ups

Here are a few close-up pictures I took during putting the army together. Librarian and Tactical Marines first, with a closeup of the Land Speeder bases. I know the image quality varies - awful light setup in here. If you want more, dig up my project log on B&C.
