Subject: How to make an armoured company in the 5th edition ??

Ever since GW killed my beloved armoured company rules, I've been trying to figure a way to bring it back using the current guard codex but without much luck. I know that mech vets would have to be included for objective taking etc., but I just don't think that russes in squadrons would be all that great(well, at least not three of them in a squadron).
So my question is, is there any way possible to revive the armoured company using the current dex and be competative in tourneys?? And please, don't throw spearhead in there anywhere, I still have nightmares about that mess

Well, Forgeworld does have an actual Armored Battlegroup list for AC's on their website. However if you want to stick to the codex and avoid the atrocious Squadron rules, you could do something like the following (fairly cookie cutter, but should give you a good idea)
HQ: CCS, 4x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Troops:
Veterans, 3x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Veterans, 3x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Veterans, 3x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Veterans, 3x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Veterans, 3x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Veterans, 3x Meltagun, Chimera w/Multilaser & Heavy Flamer
Fast Attack:
Devildog
Devildog
Devildog
Heavy Support:
LRBT
LRBT
LRBT
Comes to 1885, giving you plenty of points to spend on upgrades for a 2klist or some easy cuts to get down to 1850/1750/1500 if you want. It gives you 13 tanks and 65 infantry with plenty of AT guns and anti infantry weapons.

The closest we have in to official current edition rules for such a thing come from Forgeworld. IA volume 7 has the Krieg armored battlegroup and I think they've updated their older armored battlegroup with a pdf. Past that, you're stuck with squadrons if you want more than 3 russ.

Vaktathi, do you happen to have a link to the armoured battlegroup list?

It should be here, second half of the document
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/i/IA1update28AUG.pdf
That said, most events won't allow it because it's not directly out of a hardcopy Codex, but it's playable otherwise.

What's wrong with a squadron of Leman Russes? I know it makes them wreck on a immobilize result, but av 14 kinda negates that.

I know, but I just hate having to target one unit with three battle cannons when I should be able to target three units(if I desire) with the three battle cannons.

They all have to shoot at the same target (and thus often waste firepower on overkilling units), it makes them easier to kill, it makes it easier for an opponent to concentrate fire, and as a result of the hit allocation rules, it means tanks 12" away from the closest enemy unit can be killed through assaults, or 22" away from meltaguns.
With all the melta/lance around, plus weapons that are able to glance, and close combat attacks, Frontal AV14 doesn't mitigate it a whole lot.
The Squadron rules are absoulutely terrible. The Immobilzed=dead thing along makes them vulnerable to a whole new range of weapons they otherwise wouldn't care too much about, especially basic melee CC attacks. It makes them as easy to kill as they were in 4th edition.
You only run squadrons if you have no other choice.

You could run basilisks in Squadrons and have them fire from behind cover. This way you can just aim at the central units and have templates scatter left and right.

Dont IG have a crapload of artillery that ignores cover? and Barrage weapons calculate cover from the center of impact.

They have three: the LR Eradicator, the Colossus, and the Deathstrike. They don't get use very often though because of Always Something Better syndrome

Only a few units in the IG codex do. The Colossus Siege Mortar and Deathstrike are the only two artillery units, with the later being total garbage and the former being very good but highly situational and expensive. The Hellhound, Leman Russ Eradicator and Bane Wolf also ignore cover, but have their own issues as well.

Well Medusae and Basilisks should still do the trick, as per the Barrage rule of how to settle cover saves.

Not the Medusa, of course, and I often find myself firing directly with my Basilisks. If we still had the old codex option to leave off the Basilisk's barrage ability for a savings of 25 points I'd seriously consider doing it. The Griffon should have the best chance of finding itself in a situation where the rules for determining cover from barrage attacks come up as long as you don't face wall to wall space marines or tables paved in area terrain.
