I don't have mine on me, but I believe the familiars are arcane items. To answer your question then, you don't need them, but your sorcerers can.

I like the spell familiar for the additional spell. Cheap, and gives even a level 2 a little better flexibility.
The punchy one doesn't really seem worth it. 1 str 5 hit is alright, but I just can't get excited compared to an extra spell possibility.
The power familiar is a little cheesy. Or so Salvage tells me

yes the power familiar is cheesy but nice if you have the extra points on a character since you dont need to represent the familiar ont he model if that was what you were asking you just have to write it down in your army list

An extra power die is cheesy?

What about the Slann, that get an extra power die per spell, or the scribes that give you an extra power die for every enemy spell, or master of the dark arts that gives you TWO power dice, or boon of tzeentch, or the dark elf power dice spell, or sacrificial dagger, or......???

The banner of sorcery is cheesy. Focused rumination is cheesy. Power familiar is a good idea, but I may have never seen one in 8th, as chaos sorcerers tend to take puppets, spell familiars and dispel scrolls (roughly in that order) before they take power familiars. And when you've got just 1 level 4 in your army, with maybe a back up level 2, who's going to carry all that kit?

To the OP, all the familiars are covered on p. 114, under "Arcane Items" in the "Artefacts of the Dark Gods" section.

*L* Touche, I think you told me that when I started the army. You know, before I got married and you moved to the Chaos Wastes. I think they were still making miniatures out of lead back then, and you could get 45 chaos warriors for 25$, but they only came in 3 poses.

*Looks at current Chaos Warrior models*

I don't think anyone would've noticed...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.
