Hi,

I've just got the core of my skaven army together, and being as I have not played warhammer before I could do with a bit help pre assembly.

Basically I have 80 clanrats, would i be better having two squads of 40, or something like a 40 and two 20's. I want to put a command team in each so thats why i'm asking now. I also have 40 plague monks and a plague furness so would two sqauds of 20 (one with the machine) be best?

Cheers for any thoughts/help

Larger blocks are generally a better option. 20 clan rats, slaves or plague monks are just not tough enough to really be viable.

I would definitely run the Monks as 1 unit of 40, pushing the Furnace. You're going to take a lot of casualties on them, and the Furnace makes them Unbreakable which is awesome.

For the Clan Rats I'd do 2 unit of 40. I generally run 3 units of 30 myself, but that would require another 10 rats. Until then, 2 units of 40 would be far more viable than 4 units of 20, and if you do opt for 3x30, you can always build part of the new 10 rats as the command.

Clan rats work well in large blocks, I agree with the 3 blocks of 30, but I think 2 blocks of 40 will work well, but it just limits manouvrability. Large blocks are important, as clan rats seem to be rather good at dying, so smaller blocks tend to either run away, or get butchered in close combat on the charge by another large unit, I personally think that 20-25 is the minimum, although I havent played fantasy in while, and not this new edition, so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

i run 2x40 clanrats, and 1x40-45 monks with or without furnace. On top of this 2x50 slaves.

Too expand on this topic how is the best way to run these? I thought 5 wide was the best for clan rats and slaves. Plague Monks with a furnace I can see better horded since with the furnace I think you only need 5 wide to get the extra rank of support attacks.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Yep, five wide, x amount deep. Thanks to SiN, your ranks should be deeper than they are wide.

The Furnace (and Bell) both count as 3 models wide, so you'd actually need 7 monks in the front row to count as a horde. As the Furnace/Bell make their unit unbreakable, the loss of ranks for SiN isn't really noticeable.
