Subject: DE Dilemma: What can walk?

Going through DE list options, it's obvious that given our fragile bur fast transports, they have to be spammed to make sure some reach the mark (If you can keep them alive, even better!). However, sometimes you have 70 points left in a lift that is not enough for a unit -and- a ride for it.
So I'm resorting to the expert generals here: What in the DE list can be reliably made to start walking the board and still be marginally effective?
I thought of Wracks, but they are not fleet and might miss out on the one thing they do well...assault.
Then I imagined a 3man unit of Trueborn with 2 splinter cannons and a carbine as a rear anti-infantry base, though it may be too easy to avoid.
4 mandrakes are too few to achieve anything, despite the awesomeness of the models.
For reference, the rest of my list is a variant of DahsofPepper's: the Baron with 6 hellions, Haemoculus with 9 wyches, a few Trueborn and Warriors with blasters in Venoms, A unit of Incubi and 3 ravagers (of course).
Thanks in advance for the help.

In Boxing matches, you actually get paid to take a dive and make the other guy look good.
In Warhammer 40K, you're expected to pay cash out of your pocket for the privilege of having Marines and IG trample all over your Xenos/Chaos. |

It is a little more expensive but I like to field. a squad of 3 Trueborn w/ 2 DarkLances. Deploy them in cover with a good line of sight (or run to a good spot if you can't) on your side and let them sit and snipe with 2 Dark Lance shots everyturn. It's really nice to have the extra firepower and with the rest of your army rushing forward your enemy probably won't target them (unless it's a kill point game)
A squad of three Revears with a Blaster is 81 points if you prefer a more mobile solution.
I don't know what the rest of your list is like but you could always upgrade your raiders and ravagers. Flickerfields, splinter racks for gunboats, torment grenade launchers for wych transports, and chain snares all have good uses.

Most things that can be uppgraded already have been! All venoms have the extra cannon, raider and ravagers have flickerfields. There are no warriors/trueborn in raiders to benefit from splinter racks.
I like the idea of 3 trueborn with 2 dark lances, but thaat's a bit more points than I have.

Beastmasters.
RJBs.
Warriors or Trueborn set up with Darklances and doing no walking whatsoever.
Talos/Chronos (though I really don't recommend it if the rest of the army is in Raiders)
Scourges with Haywire Blaster deepstriking.
Probably all that is in rough order of cheapest to most expensive, though Bikes and Beastmasters can have a *lot* of variance.
If you're worried about specific point totals you might want to offer up your list on the bloody altar of the Army Lists forum - there's always a chance someone could save/invest your points with more of an eye to the overall list that way.

If you are walking, you mine as well go with 10x Grotesques led by 2x Heamonculi. If you are going this route, you mine as well just take 2x WWPs, and put the rest of the army in there. What you put in there is up to you.
My favorite unit in the army is a 10x Grotesque Unit that is fearless and nearly impossible to stop.
If you come across strength 10 weapons, just spread your Grots out in a straight line, and you'd be amazed at how resilient they can be, especially with a cover save to boot. Then deploy your two WWPs on the flanks at the end of turn 1, and go to town as your beastmasters rush out and assault everything without having one shot fired on them. If you do this, don't take any heavy weapons for obvious reasons.

He actually said he was mechanized but had some extra points left over and was looking for a cheap unit he could walk with them. Your idea is more geared towards a full Dark Footdar plan.

Oh, okay!
Go with the trueborne on foot with splinter cannons then. 40" range shots are not easy to avoid
That is what I would go with given the options presented.

10 grotesques with 1 or two haemonculy is a very good WWP delivery system.
However, it is very very very bad vs vindocators I think. And who uses vindicators the moast? Lash whip chaos. Ouch ouch ouch.
It is still a good plan for a WWP I think, but it is very exensive, and look out for those vindicators. You can strech out for some space so you can open up two WWP quite wide, but it is not so good in Dawn of War (?).
I would perhaps try to do this with a unit or two of 10 wracks in the list do you can deploy midfield.
If you have 85 point left (preferably 95!) and a haemoncaly as your HQ you can do a 3 man wrack with a venom. It is not mutch but it is scoring.
