I recently bought Imperial Armor 5, the siege of vraks vol.1 and I have a friend who wants to play the renegades and heretics army presented in the book and I was just wondering are these army lists stand alone? Or can they be supplemented with units/vehicles from the IG codex as the army lists are somewhat limited vehiclewise, second when I purchase the other 2 vraks books are the lists presented in those stand alone or are they used in conjunction with the lists in the first book? Finally can any of these units be inducted into a normal guard/chaos army?

Codex units usable in special armies are usually relisted along with new choices, sometimes in different FOC slots, different unit sizes or point costs. If it's not in there at all, you may not use it.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

the IA lists are stand alone.

now, some of the more special units might have an entry where it can be used in a codex army at possably different point value or FoC slot or a restricted number.

It is mostly stand-alone. it is also Wildly inaccurate; the Renegades and heretics list has a Free-download-able update on FWs website Here the Close Support, renegade Tank and Weapons Platforms listings all reference you to IA1 or the IG codex; IA1 has a free download update on the same page.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Thanks for the answers.

I am still confused how are units from IA1 used since things like the destroyer and thunderer are not in a codex could they be used along with my guard and my friends renegades? Would this go for any of the units in IA1? Finally can superheavy vehicles be used in normal games or strictly apocalypse only?

Treat them as additional units to the codex ones.

So yes, the IA tanks can be used by the renegade armies (where they can, according to their list) or the other codex armies (where they can according to IA).

You CAN use superheavies in normal games, but they are tougher to kill, and it can be like playing a game where you have 3000pts and he has a single grot with a stick. There's a power balance thing.

What if it isn't specified, for instance the Destroyer tank hunter, could it be used with my friends renegedes list. My friend has a basilisk, but there is no option to take one in the renegades list, however couldn't he just use one through IA1?

certain super heavies are ok in normal games.

Baneblades and Warhound titans are actually most vulnerable to "normal" tank hunting weapons like lascannons and melta guns.

Gargantuan Creatures certaintly shouldn't be taken in normal games.

just use what you and your friend want to use and have fun. Fun first, balance 2nd(and usually, the IA units have the disadvantage)

If your using IA units or super heavies than by definition it's not a "normal" game. It's no different than any 40k expansion e.g. apocalypse, spearhead, Planetstrike. So as long as your opponents agree than it's A ok.

IA units explicitly state whether they can be used in regular codex armies ("Can be used as 1-3 heavy support choice in any Codex: Ork army")

You CAN field a super heavy vehicle in a regular game, but you may not field any other units, as it takes up your entire FOC.

Renegades and Heretics does list the Bassie in the Close support section(First entry) in the link I provided(Which is the list you should be using since it is updated for 5th edition); also the Destroyer is on there, it is the last entry in the Renegade Tank.
