So after many years of pondering, thinking, weighing out pros and cons of all forces, I finally gave in and decided to collect Black Templar. Picked up the book yesterday.
While im pretty excited about the choice, I realize I'll be needing a decent place to start. Seeing how I never collected 40K before, whats the best place to start? Would AOBR be a good purchase to get into it, or would I be better off with one of those box forces? I'd like AOBR but I dont really need all the orks, as I have no intention of collecting them anytime soon!
Any info would be great! thanks!

AOBR is worth it if simply for the mini rule book. It is an invaluable gaming aid and can be taken anywhere (maybe not the shower).
You could always trade away the orks if you like. The forces that you get for marines look ok as long as you don't get 2 black reach sets (I know someone who bought 5).
You also get templates and dice, which help a lot. I would avoid using the range sticks though, just pick up a cheap tape measure instead, it will be far more accurate. I got one from a pound shop.

The whippy sticks are only good for whipping people, but the marines are good squad filler, the termies and dread are great, especially for templars.

Plus, if you add up how much it costs to buy most of the stuff seperately you are basically getting the orks for free. The hardback rulebook alone is more than half the black reach set's cost, and the mini one is far preferable for reference during a game.

thanks for the replies all. I'll definitely pick up AOBR for the rule book, I agree on that. I was at the store the other day and thought "hey, I like fluff, the rulebook would be great" then I saw the price at 70 bucks and put it away quickly.
Mini fluff hey? I'll work on something. TBH I wasnt too sure on which crusades they were leading, I just picked the book up yesterday, so I'll have to read through!

Ok here it is. Mini fluff. Don't judge too bad, it's the first time i've written one!
For ten thousand years, both chaos space marines and black templar have had only one thing in common; both swore oaths to begin crusades of war and death, until heretic or righteous emerged victorious. Since that time, the black templar have ever stood vigilant and zealous in Sigismunds honor, against heretic and Xenos alike. Their number is many, and their righteousness and ardour goes unquestioned by all of the imperium of man, even other space marine chapters.
A normal man would become complacent if involved with such deeds and history, thinking themselves beyond the scope of perfection, becoming arrogant and allowing decadence to take hold in his heart. Truly, the Black templar have achieved and earned their chapters honour countless times over the last ten millennia, but till this day they have never once stopped their efforts to cleanse the universe of taint and foul xeno threat.
It is with this ambition and vision that these humble servants of the God Emperor wage war daily against the enemies of the imperium, and with swords and shields in hand, encased in the ancient power armour of old, they find themselves in constant battle on thousands of worlds, saving billions of lives.
To this end, Captain Melchiah Ulysses leads his battle barge towards the eye of terror. The black crusades lead by the corrupt brethren of the warp has become a stain on the imperiums integrity, and even worse so, defence of the inner systems. With Cadia in a state of constant war, and their system ravaged by heretic and daemons, Captain Ulysses has vowed to burn the rot of heresy at the root, and lead his finest into the cadian system and engage the members of the black legion directly.
In times such as these, half measures amount to nothing. Too long has the war master Abbadon run rampant and without check, as well as the dark gods accursed minions. By blood and fury will the black templars change the course of this war, by going to the Cadian gate and taking back what once was an impassable bastion of stern might. With the Emperor ever watching from the Golden throne on Terra, they will not fail.

Cadian liberation sounds good! Now what do you mean by crusade colors? do BT typically choose different colors per crusade?

BT usually have some kind of mark or badge to represent a crusade but usually keep the same colours...
They also have Marshalls not captains.

I'm starting a Templar army myself. To begin, I would probably aim to get a 10 man initiate squad with Bolt pistol/combat weapons, as well as an Emperor's champion. The EC is compulsory in armies over 750 anyway, he adds some badass rules (In the form of vows) to your army, and also he is sweet in close combat.
Initiate squads are our only troop choice, and are relatively fearsome in close combat. Although it would help to take a rhino with them, they have the capacity to slog up the board faster than your regular marines with righteous zeal.
I'm not sure what parts the AOBR marines come in. Can they be given chainswords?

I am also looking into them and found this website very informative:

Not sure if it's still valid but it's a starting point.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I'm pretty sure the Seargants can be given Chainswords, but the tac squads are bolter with 2 heavy weapons. Of Course, getting the Termies and Mini Rulebook are amazing, it makes it a great deal on just those two alone.
But the whipping sticks are only good for whipping people, as has been said. Or knocking down enemy troops that die if you want to annoy your opponent.
