I have the vallejo range of washes and acsess to GW's line. I have a Wave Serpent whose air intake vents are painted yellow, but for the recesses I suppose I would need to wash it. With a color like yellow, though, I am nervous about using an inappropriate wash color or marring the yellow coat. Any advice?

Don't wash it You're talking about the vents moulded to the lower body right? They're a bit large and flat for washes really.
Washing those will lead to pools at the bottom, and nothing or very little at the top. Uneven colours. Bleurgh.
What shade of yellow are you using? You might want to consider doing the whole intake in brown first, and then layering yellow on the raised area.

Well, it's a tad late now, but I airbrushed it all in Sunshine Yellow or whatever the GW equivalent is.
I do have Bubonic brown if that would work, I suppose.

Yup, a warm brown should work well on yellow.

The Vallejo yellow ink is REALLY strong. I love that stuff. You could put it in the recessed parts of the vent and it would look pretty good - you'd just have to brace the model so that the vents were perpendicular to the table. If you end up not liking the effect, it's easy to paint over with brown. You could also paint the raised portions silver, and/or then wash them with the yellow ink. That looks really cool - used sparingly. Then you could leave the recessed portions of the vents the plain yellow. Again, easy to paint over if you don't like. I'd go with option 2. You can always test the look on a piece of sprue.

You could try just painting in a warm brown and then using a paper towel to quickly wipe off the top parts so the yellow shows through again.

I appreciate the help, everybody. I'll probably go with bubonic brown until I manage to buy Iyanden darksun.
