I've been a vanilla space marine player for years, but I recently bought some Sanguiny Guard due to loving the models

So I'm planning to use my army as a Blood Angel's army now just with a different color scheme. Looking at all the example lists, they all seem to have Death Companies, which begs the questoin, is a Death Company a requirement for a Blood Angel army?

No they are not required and if you ask most people, they are also not recommended. They are almost the equivalent of sternguard, a few stat tweeks here and there, and also add the fact that they have rage. I think if you are looking to build something between 1k-1.5k, dont make a squad of them. Anyhting larger, it might worth experimenting with them.

I've been playing BA for the last 9 months and I've never picked any up. But I don't play a DOA army either.

Yes, they can be good, but you have to weigh the good with the bad. They have some great weapons options, can be equipped in various ways, they have relentless, fearless, furious charge, FnP. But, they also can be a huge points blow to your list (expensive), they have Rage, and count as a non-scoring unit. Depending on the game, they can be really good, or end up doing nothing, just depends on the situation they find themselves in.

Eye of Terror... I think

They are a huge psychological threat to your opponent. Even a cheap (er) 5 man squad deployed via drop pod or fast razorback can change your apponents whole battle plan. Or take them in a serious killy squad with PW's and a Chappy and for the love of god keep it away from demolisher cannons and watch it rip anything appart in CC.

But not it is not required, just fun and fluffy for me as I play Flesh Tearers.

I run death company in a Stormraven with jump packs, power weapons and Lemartes. They kill EVERYTHING. You just have to use the Stormraven very judiciously and most likely will outflank/reserve it unless you expect to go first. Otherwise it becomes a point sink. There should also be a death company dreadnaught attached. Throw in a combi-melta sternicide squad in a drop pod to blow up your opponent's biggest threat's tank and it will completely annihilate his battle plans. I haven't lost a game yet using this combo (with a few other goodies involved). I say take the Death Company, just learn all the tricks to dealing with Rage, because there are pages about it.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
