I haven't written a tutorial before but I'm rather proud of this so wanted to share.

After getting the new Sanguinary Guard for the Blood Angels I was dreading having to paint the gold armour as I always found the metallic golds didn't cover that well (not for me anyway) so after a few concoctions and many test pieces later I settled on this method for doing my gold, it actually worked so well imo that I use it all the time now.

The paints you'll need;

Mithril Silver (GW metallic)
Macharius Solar Orange (GW Foundation)
Gryphonne Sepia (GW Wash)

So here it is. . .

1st. First a decent black (preferably sprayed) undercoat [no pic]

2nd. an 1:1 mix of Mithril Silver & Macharius Solar Orange + a little water to help the mix. Layer it on good but should only take two thin coats to get a decent finish. . .

3rd. do fine highlights of neat Mithril Silver [no pic again but the pics I took at this stage didn't really show any difference, but there is! )

4th. Generous was of Gryphonne Sepia. . .

And that's it! Finish off the rest of the details and I ended up with this. . .

It does actually look a lot more goldy in person but I do suggest you try it and hopefully you'll be as pleased with it as me!

As always C&C very welcome!

Looks good. I prefer to us shinning gold but maybe I will give this a try in the future.

The gold that citadel makes requires about as many coats as you put on different colors to get an even finish.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I use shining gold over calthan brown and highlight through to burnished with a touch of silver, and a sepia wash. Similar idea though.

Shining gold is absolutely a thin paint and doesn't need to be watered down.

Very good. I might possibly use that.
One thing i find hard to comprehend is the fact that the last picture looks brighter than the 2nd to last picture...

I assume because the last pic was done in a lightbox or similar.

It looks like fantasy gold. That is, 'gold.'

Fantasy gold, however, looks nothing like real gold.

If you don't like the coverage that GW's gold paint gives, why continue to use it? Reaper and Vallejo both make very good metallics, why not use them?

I've had good results with Vallejo gold. I really like the 'eyedropper' bottle too. I can just squeeze out a drop and put the cap back on.

Citadel makes some great paints, but not all of them are. I'm no prude, I'll use other brands of paints.

Or no paint at all...

Not trying to hijack your post here, it's just a similar 'gold' theme you guys might be interested in. NOT an easy method though. Or cheap...

I think your results were excellent. My only problem with attempting the technique is that I'm color-blind.

People ask how I paint being color blind and I respond "The same way I colored in Kindergarten. The color is printed right on the label..." LOL. Blending colors, especially when the color is labeled something slowed like "Iyanden Darksun" is just way, way out of my comfort zone.

Thanks for the complement!

Colour deficiency is actually quite common, particularly in men, but the rarer more severe colour blindness can be quite problematic in more than a few ways (not to mention fashion! ). I actually work in an opticians so know how difficult it can be for some people to deal with it so it's good to see you can jest about your colour blindness.

People don't understand that I can see colors, I just don't see the same ones they do. I guess it would be more accurate to say I see less colors. Greens and browns are the same to me, blues and purples... I don't find it much of a problem on a daily basis though. I certainly don't feel the least bit handicapped by it.
