"Devil's Reach? Everyone's talking about it, these days. They say it's going to be the biggest skrap strike in thirty years, right on our doorstep practically. They say that whoever strikes it big will be set up for life. They say the skrap's just lying about on the ground up there for anyone to see. But you don't see thems as says all that hurrying to make their claim, do ya?

"And that's because Devil's Reach is well named. The old folks from up that way say that when the One built this world, Chthonax the Devil reached up from his pit of darkness where the one had drowned his evil, and took hold of one last piece of land and named it his. And I've been there and I believe it. Because it's a twisted place. Nothing good will grow on those hills. No decent brick will sit square upon another. The air rots in your lungs.

"But skrap? Oh, yes. There's skrap alright. The marks are all over the place: no natural lake should be as round or as deep as the Black. No stone should be as square nor as big as Gregor's Steps without showing the mark of chisel or hammer. And nothing like the Iron Tower should exist on this side of a nightmare. Scratch the surface and there'll be skrap aplenty. But I'll not touch it and I'll not go back. And if you do, then you're a fool and the Devil's reach will take you."

If you're a follower of Warseer, The Miniatures Page, Tabletop Gaming News or any other such forum, then you'll probably already have seen the name "Skrapyard" bandied about. But as we're flying pretty low on the radar these days, I'd not be surprised if you'd not so much as heard a whisper of this new game.

Skrapyard is a 40mm miniatures skirmish game from Precinct Omega Publishing, set in a strange world not unlike our own but where the borders of reality are porous and where, at some impossibly distant time in history, a forgotten civilization left enigmatic clues to not only a sophisticated technology that the world's inhabitants are only just beginning to understand, but also to an unarticulated menace more dangerous than anything they can imagine. Across the barriers between realities come strange beings: the Faerie, the Dragons, the Exiles and, stranger yet, the forces of the aethyr, the birthplace of universes and the very stuff that dreams are made on.

The first book in the series - currently in open beta through our website - is Devil's Reach, which introduces you to the rules and world of Skrapyard. Our first two miniatures are out now, with more to follow over the next few months.

I like the concept of this and the style shown by the two miniatures.

Why have you chosen to go with a 40mm scale though? If you went for 25 - 30mm or so scale, people would be able to use many other models to supplement the growing Precinct Omega range. As it stands, anyone wanting to play will have to wait months for the models to come out before they can be played and have a scale that won't work with any other game.

I think you just answered your own question

It's a question I'm asked with repetitive regularity, to the point that I actually addressed it in Episode 16 of the Precinct Omega Hobbycast.

40mm is an established scale of miniatures wargaming and although it isn't as prevalent as 25-32mm, there are plenty of models in the scale out there to be used. I use models from The Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company, Manorhouse Games, Hasslefree, Spyglass and Perry Miniatures amongst others. I have absolutely no objection to people using other companies' miniatures and will, in fact, feature a selection of alternatives in the finished rulebook.

However, I would observe that the rules are not scale-dependent. The rules have been playtested with a range of scales and in fact plays perfectly well at 25-32mm (early playtests used LOTR miniatures) and not too badly at 54mm (although a certain amount of fudging is required with respect to base sizes, and you might want to double most ranges).

I chose 40mm for the Precinct Omega Skrapyard range because, in the course of playtesting, it was determined that this was the scale at which the game delivered the best experience. End of.

The argument is often made by people that they would buy POP minis, but those minis don't fit with their existing collections. But that doesn't seem to stop Dystopian Wars being popular. Wyrd Games make their miniatures in 32mm scale but, funnily enough, I've never seen anyone use them to play any game but Malifaux (yes, I'm sure there are exceptions, but most Wyrd minis are sold either as collectors items or for Malifaux) - the same goes for Infinity. When was the last time you saw someone field a WOTR army with alternate minis?*

Anyway, the third mini in the range should be going into production soon (how soon depends on whether some of my tardy clients actually pay their bills sooner rather than later). The release date of the full rulebook has been pushed back until the miniatures range is more mature, but the Zeroth Edition will remain available for the time being.

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess that I'm just not as familiar with the alternate scales of gaming (a common experience amongst GW/PP/Wyrd/Infinity gamers I would think) and didn't realise how established it was as a setting. I'm glad to hear there are lots of model options to use while Precint Omega sculpts the next pieces in the range. I like games that are not hugely scale dependent too, especially when there is a slowly growing official range.

With alternate scales, I tend to worry that I'd love the game and be stuck waiting for a slow release of models if there were few similar scale alternative models. For me, I'd love to look at the game again when there are perhaps half a dozen figures per faction, i.e. enough to make a starter force for a game. The style is very neat for sure
