A lot of friends of mine are really into this Fantasy warhammer and after giving it a try I really like it. I have Tau for a 40k army as well as a 1500pt SW and a good amount of Eldar.
I do not know what I want for Fantasy so maybe you might be able to help me. So far I have narrowed it down to the armies that I believe look the coolest and seem to have some good
stuff in their armies.

I don't know much about fantasy but at least you can save money by using daemons of chaos if you want to play 40k, you can use the army in both.
|
I play:
Imperial Fists - 9000 pts
Tyranids - 1500 pts
GENERATION 9: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment. |

I voted for Bretonnians.
The Pros:
You don't see them very often (in my experience), so they'll likely be a bit of fresh air with the people you play against.
They look fantastic on the gaming table, since it's a boisterous profusion of bright colors instead of another "here's a block of 40 guys in red and black with silver weapons (yes, I AM painting a unit of goblins. How did you know?)."
Unit sizes of knights tend to be small, so you can really go all out on each individual model and make them shine instead of trying to assembly line 100 dudes in generic chain mail.
It allows you to get your inner geek on by hitting heraldry guides, studying resource images, going to museums and SCA gatherings or what not to get all those lovely tabards, flags, and horse blankey things looking legit and cool.
The Cons
8th edition was not kind to cavalry in general, and I fear you'll be needing a lot of it.
The Bretonnians tend to struggle in low points games, so you'll probably lose a lot until you get up to around 2000+ points. Then again, I hear they can be tricky to play correctly, so you might just lose a lot anyway.
Because each model is different and unique, you can't just do a quick slopshop job and crank out a full unit.
===
If I had it to do all over again, I'd play Tomb Kings and Bretonnians. Whenever I see a Bret army on the field, all painted and suave, I look at my unpainted Goblin horde and HE host and wonder if I can find someone willing to make a substantial trade.
Plus... C'mon -

What's not to like?
If you're not into painting (or are unlikely to revel in the geekiness of it), I wouldn't recommend them. But they LOOK cool enough to keep my interest.

Yes to both.
Lizardmen are - all around - probably the single most reliable and dependable army. They are really hard to go wrong with.
Dwarves are also solid, though they lack a magic phase and any fast units. But in combat, they're like little angry rocks.

WoC! They've got some cool looking troops IMHO. Even those Chaos hounds look neato.

Whatever you do, don't do Vampires. They cost a bunch of money and they're weak. I voted for WoC 'cause they're freakim' awesome and stuff. Personally, I think Bretonnia is pretty boring, but that's just me.
And I agree with the others, if you don't choose any of those armies on the poll, do Lizardmen, they're great for a first army.

I picked WoC because I've always wanted to make an army of all chaos knights and warriors. You might consider TKs though. The new models coming out for them look absolutely fantastic.

Of the choices listed, I'd go with WoC.
The suggestions from your friends, dwarfs and lizardmen, are both very good armies to start with as well.
All three of those options give you armies that are relatively easy to "learn" and at least let you start playing on the table without getting crushed or needing to learn complicated rules.
IMO it comes down to what you feel like looking at every time you play/ what you feel like painting.

Just go with whatever you think looks good. After all, for all the advice people are giving about running an army, you have to paint it before you field it, and if you don't absolutely love the way an army looks then you'll hate painting it.
I chose to go Ogre Kingdoms. Sure I'll be getting stomped competitively, but man those models look great and are tons of fun to convert.

True, go with what you like.
One thing with WoC is that it is incredibly deep. You can make a whole bunch of completely different but extremely competetive builds.

Warriors of Chaos
They can be built really cheaply, they have awesome models (at least for Warriors and derivatives like Knights, and especially Lords) and can do a wide variety of builds. They also have some really cool background and feel to them.
