I played my first game of warhammer 40k yesterday, though it happen to be a Apocalypse game(prob not the best way to have a first game).
I put out my few units and my team goes to doing things, I inform people that it is my first game and they(both my team and the other) suggest that I go into this well fortified building right in front of me, and hold the objective there. Then on turn two this guy brings in this huge thing with a wrecking ball, an orc titan. He then made it destroy the building(luckily only my scouts were in there, though I lost most of those when the building died) and then proceeded to try to kill off all my forces with this titan. In the end my Chaplin, Captain and one member of my tactical squad were left standing, after me and a few units from my team shot the thing until it had a huge explosion that killed all on that section of the table save for my units I mentioned.

Two things I learned and would like to discuss, was the guy a douche for attacking the new player with the titan? Also are titans even worth it? he dumped over 1000 points into it, and it wasn't really deadly (most of my forces were killed by his team, not him) it was more just annoying. Discuss?

It was a douche move on his part, but you were at an objective.

I'd say that was a jerk move, especially for doing that to some one on their first game.

Honestly I say its your fault for jumping into an advanced version of the game for your first foray. I would say its perfectly elicited if you are on the table. Apoc isn't for newbs. I would suggest playing a normal sized game with a friend so that you can actually learn to play the game.

Oh also, Titans are a point of contention in Apoc. While they are massively powerful, they are equally as expensive, and their are some weapons specially designed to kill them. So they can be worth it, however they can also be points sinks. Its all in how you use them.

PraetorDave has it right on the money. You're new to this and from what I can tell they weren't expecting a newbie to be around. Play some smaller 1000 point games, the game will treat you kinder.

I agree with PraetorDave, You cant blame someone for assaulting an objective with their more reliable units (in this case a Titan) in apocalypse. If you didnt want to get your ass handed to you, dont play apocalypse.

I would be annoyed if someone called me a douche for engaging the newb when theres seasoned players on his team. I wouldnt expect them to want me to change my battleplan just to accommodate for an ENEMY newb.

It would be a different in a 1v1 40k game, but in a 2v2 or 3v3 apoc game, its give no quarter.

Does not sound like a very good player to me. From the sound of how he plays against new players. Its going to take you about 1 year and you will be twice the player he is and be doing jerk moves to him wiping out his army.

As it stands now, If I had the models to build the kinda eldar, SW or Ork armies I would want. They guy who did similar things to me when I first started out would be under my mercy. Especially since he plays eldar and I would Drop Pod his ars..

Oh no, I never called him out on it, and I can totally understand needing an objective. I was polite and rolled with the punches, I did not verbalize anything about it.

You were holding an objective, and thus were a valid target for all kinds of big nasty things to charge at you. If you were off in the corent, and a veteran charged you with his nastiest thing for the sheer purpouse of kicking in your face, then it'd be a different story.

I agree with the others, playing Apoc as a first game is a bad idea. You should start with smaller games to get the rules down first, before going into Apoc. Apoc is meant for vets who want to have ridiculously large battles...not a place for a brand spanking new player to start.

You were playing apocalypse...and holding an objective...and bad things happened?

Complaining about that is like complaining about dirty, dirty things happening to you at an orgy.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

1) If it’s a game for fun.

Kind of a douche move, But You did decide to play an Apoc Game for your first game... Witch isn’t the best way to learn,

2) If it’s a tourney or if there was something to be gained, beside self gratification,

Then all bets are off, Just because you are new doesn’t mean im going to take it easy on you, If I enter a tourney It to win, plan and simple,

Now if its a friendly game I can careless if I win or lose, because its played for fun, Not for a Pries, or new addtion to my army

To answer the two questions thrown my way, I was off by myself and he did this. Playing the Apocalypse as my first also only occurred due to being invited by several of the players, I had no intention of making it my first game.

I'm not so much complaining as was wondering if there was any reason other than to be mean that this was done, it would appear that there is.

Tis true. And although you kinda set yourself up, its still sucks that in your first game you got your A$$ handed to you by a titan. Oh well. Live and learn.

Indeed, you were on an objective, and might as well have had your guys waving a giant sign saying 'HEY! COME KILL US!'. On the bright side, in your first game you got to kill a Titan.

I'm going to side with the people saying it was a slightly douchy move, but also: objective.
OTOH you can now say that you killed a titan in your first ever game. You got your hoop handed to you sure, but you killed a titan. Huge bragging rights, especially if you can prove it. Might I suggest doing something special with the model that managed to do it? Special paintjob, name him, something.

At my flgs apocs the way they get the new guys in so that everyone can play and learn. Apoc was one of the first games I played when I started gaming again.

Generally the more advanced players stay away from these games as they can get rather messy.

But well done fella, killing a Titan is an awesome feat for your first game. I hope you gave the guys who survived the carnage some mini medals.

Just chiming in on the issue of points costs for superheavies:

Some are totally worth it, others aren't.

Then there's the Imperator Titan: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2440056_Imperial_Datasheet_-_Emperor_Battle_Titan.pdf

That thing is probably the most undercosted model in the entire game, easily capable of destroying two or thrice their points in enemy models. To be fair though, the amount of effort involved in scratch-building such a monster kinda makes up for it. And they're by no means unkillable, they're the biggest "SHOOT ME!" sign you can place on a board, but they can live through most of what an enemy can throw at it.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

I don't know why people are saying the guy's douchey for assaulting the objective, regardless of the fact a new guy is on it. Whether you're new or you've been playing since the 80s, you still need to roll the same dice to blow a titan up. For all we know, the guy didn't know you were the new guy and was just trying to accomplish the objective.
