I love my models , but i think the plain black bases ruin them , I really want them to stand out .

Could someone help me , please ?

Start by adding sand to your bases (cover the base with glue, then dip it in sand - once dried, paint your base of the desired colour and drybrush the sand).

Once you'll feel ready for the next step, grab a 40k basing kit and be creative!

I really dislike the basing kit , i got it thinking ' oh god this is going to be amazing ' and it kinda sucked.

Im basing the marines of my ideal board , a burnt down , destroyed imperial city with the often burnt grass

you can use a lot of cool stuff... cork, sand, slate, resin bases

Basing is also largely dependent upon what colour your models are. What are they? I have a turquoise DE army and a Middenland Empire army, both of which are quite cold colours. To compliment this i based mine on snow bases which are quiet straight forward. i dip the bases in sand when they are assembled then undercoat them black. If you already have the mini's painted thats fine just PVA then sand them and paint them black. i follow this up with a drybrush of grey, as it looks like concrete which would also be useful for your destroyed imperial city. Finally i put PVA over the sand in random patches, with a small amount of the 'concrete' (sand thats been drybrushed grey) showing still and dip the base in baking soda.

Hope this has been of help mate!

What I use:

- Cork: tear it apart with your hands, makes stony surface

- Sand: salvage from playgrounds, constructions of the beach, great for giving a dirt texture to tha base.

- Thick salt: makes nice rocks on the ground; but I advice adding some superglue on them after applied on the base.

- talc + pva: a decent snow effect.

ive tried using salt once, but it dissolved once i started painting and washing it

That's why I cover it with superglue first, then I prime it (I base my minis before priming all with Krylon spray, only then I paint).

All the small stones here are salt grains.

I really like using bark to make all sorts of interesting shapes. It's cheap-as-free.

Well I understand that you want them to stand out.

But really keep it simple.

Because even the simplest basing gives great results. It is better to base 100% simple than only one or two great.
Start with your ordinary troops. You'll progress in the proces so when you are at the more unusual stuff you will be way better at it and are able to make more exotic bases.
One more thing. I think you'd be best of sticking to your gameboard theme because there lies experience in basing too. If you're done and have unifomity even the simplest bases will look great together with you exotic ones.

Good luck and cheers mate

I would advise to choose something that complements, and does not distract, from the paintjob of your models. Like, sand primed and painted with one neutral tone 9such as a simple basecoat/wash/drybrush techique) with some grasses poking up, that's already gonna look awesome.

Quick and easy bases are now possible with the textured paints that GW put out. I really like them, you can control how much texture you want, use more then one to get a layered color, highlight with a wash or two. Love their new line, everything in it is great.
