Now most of the time when I play against other marine players they always seem to use riflemen dreads, Twin las, or even missile launcher dreads. I seem to be about the only one to use Assault oriented Dreadnoughts anymore.

I've always thought of Dreadnoughts to be wall smashing, tank tearing, infantry squashing CC monsters but nowadays I see them more as deployable gun boats which saddens me...

What have you always thought or preferred Dreadnoughts to be like?

i only use them, and then not that often, in my salamander army. i know with close combat the thunder hammers are mastercrafted. however, i usualy deepstrike them in, so, no assault. i enjoy the squad, 5 strong with hvy flamer (twin linked). usualy use them with my scouts locater beacon, to bring them right where i want them. when i do use them, it is only with scouts.

I use em for punching, but even then they have a gun to fire on their way in.

Tarpitting mostly, because my friends never bring proper anti-walker weapons (i.e: power fists). It's fun to charge a Dread into a mob of 30+ guardsmen and have my friend realise there's nothing he can do since he didnt buy krak grenades or a Power fist.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

Assaulty dreads always seem to die on me. There's just too many hidden powerfist/klaw things out there. I would much rather take a lascannon shot than 4 hits from a PK. Then there's meltabombs, wierd stuff like witchblades, it just seems like they stand up better against return fire than against return punches. Also, shooty dread is a mobile heavy weapon platform so its harder to hide from than a dev squad who can't move to react to a slight shift in angles.

I like my dreads cheap and expendable and plodding up the board melting tanks (or threatening to melt tanks) while soaking fire that would otherwise be aimed at killing my transports. Its nice if they get a lucky target choice to tarpit something that doesn't have the capability to hit back, but I just don't see that very often. I don't even take dreads very often though. No Vulkan, no forge master, no interest, I just tack them on to fill up space, usually just one to switch up the targets and confuse the badguys sense of priorities, occasionally a second one for redundancy. I just have a really hard time keeping them alive.

Most assault walkers are very durable in Close Combat, but they generally lack the volume of attack to do any serious damage there. You have at most maybe 5 attacks and you will kill maybe 2-3 people a turn. That is not enough to really wreck a unit, but it is enough to tarpit them, and that is all you need. If your roll in combat is to tarpit, Why not change out the combat weapon for some shooting?

The only ones that are actually good in combat are the BA talon dreads. They actually get enough attacks to hurt and rout units.

I don't actually like dreadnoughts of either type; I have two. One's an Assault Cannon/Powerfist with Heavy Flamer. The other's a Multi-Melta/Missile launcher, and neither one of them seems to ever make back their points for me.

Kind of a waste of money, retrospectively.

But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

I like my dual autocannon dreads. They shell peanuts like no tomorrow.
