Subject: When Exactly does GK Grandmaster's Grand Strategy take place?

The codex says, "At the start of the game, before forces are deployed...". I'm curious as to the exact order of how things would work in a normal game. Because a game normal goes like this.
1) Roll for Mission
2) If Seize Ground then Place Objectives
3) Roll for Deployment Type
3) Roll to see who goes first/picks deployment zones
5) Place objectives if Capture and Control
6) First Player Deploys
If you take start of the game as being very literally the start, then you would have to decide before you even knew the mission, meaning if you choose 'Unyielding Anvil' you would be wasting the ability if you roll 'Kill points'. If you think of 'before forces deploy' and being the main indicator, then the main question is does it happen before or after you role to see who goes first/ picks deployment. This can be very important as scout moves are much more powerful when you go first. Anyhow what are ya'll thoughts on the matter?

Good catch!
So, we've got 2 conditions that need to apply. Condition 1: It needs to take place at the start of the game. Condition 2: It needs to occur before forces are deployed.
Since the game doesn't start until after forces are deployed, there's never a moment when both conditions are met.
Ergo, this ability can never be activated and does nothing ever.
On a more serious note, I think it's time everyone take their GK codex and stick it on a dusty shelf to wait until the FAQ is released and it's actually playable. There's just too many rules contradictions right now.

I seriously doubt people are just gonna wait for the FAQ. As usual, GK players will assume the most advantageous interpretation, whereas everyone else will assume the most dis-advantageous advantageous, leaving the tournement organizers to make one of said costumers angry by making a call and is usually based on how many customer fall into each of the said categories.
I digress. I think the determining question is this " Is rolling for deployment part of deploying forces?" If so it is done before the role, if not it is done after. I personally think it is the former, but as I stated above, that is mainly because I don't play GK. I'm just playing in a tourney this Sat. and wanted everyones opinion and do my research before I run into players that haven't playing out of a week old codex.

It specifies you roll before forces are deployed.
That means any time before.
So, I would say the player can roll whenever he wants as long as he does it before deployment begins.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

I agree, but does rolling for deployment counts as deployment beginning?

No deployment begins once a player actually begins deploying, whether on the table or in reserve. Choosing who gets to deploy first is not deploying. Choosing which side to deploy on is not deploying. Placing your units into the theater of battle by either placing them on the board or in reserve is deploying.

Before force are deployed means right before the first unit is deployed. It is obvious that GK are not supposed to gamble when choosing their Grand Strategy, also rolling for deployment is determining the mission, not deployment.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

Before deployment == any time before you start placing models on the table.

True, but doing it any time sooner would be a stupid move for the GK.

Yes, it would indeed. Not against the rules, however!
