this is the source of inspiration:

as you see the helmets are very distinct, since this is my first try at "sculpting" i'm sure i wont get it exactly right until later.

Your green stuff work is still looking fairly doughy. The interior of that shield needs a lot of work; I'd probably scrap the wrist strap you have altogether to try for something smaller. The shield itself could use some sort of detail, like layered plates, an Imperial Aquila, and so on. I wouldn't have made a chainsword from greenstuff, as just cutting another chainsword down and using that might work better, and look more consistent. The guy's face in the first picture is a bit blurry due to the photo, but looks like you're headed in the right direction. You're going to need some sharper detail to make it look like the artwork though.

Try and get another smoother layer on the shield, or those fingerprints are going to show through on the paint job. Smooth those shoulderpads! I echo SRM with the chainsword - cut one down and add it in.

For the shield handle, I assume the thick ring is to hold it in place moreso than an aesthetic choice. Consider thinning it out a bit, and creating a dimple or slot in the back of the arm that you can set with a plug. For the handle itself, consider removing the Greenstuff and using a trimmed down vehicle handrail.

There's a lot to be said for sculpting something well, and you're on the right track.

thanks for the feedback guys, i've since doing this learnt that if i want a smooth surface on the greenstuff i should dip the tool in oil.
I've removed the shield and am in the process of removing the buckle and handguard on the inside of it.
What i don't have is the bits you mentioned, but what i do have is my sons vast collection of lego, i'll rummage it for something appropriate.

However, i managed to smooth out the GS chainsword, and now it looks awesome again.

The helmet on the tactical is now also more akin to the illustration, it took another small layer of GS to do it, i'll post update when i'm done with detailing the shield.

Thanks again!

regards,
R
