Subject: Wraithlords - How best to equip?
|
 |
Plummeting Black Templar Thunderhawk Pilot

In my Iyanden list, i'm running triple Wraithlord. I have them equipped as:
Wraithlord 1
Flamer
Flamer
Wraithsword
Wraithlord 2
Flamer
Flamer
Wraithsword
Bright Lance
Wraithlord 3
Flamer
Flamer
Eldar Missile Launcher
Bright Lance
Is this an optimal loadout? I am definately keeping the 3 of them in the list (to act as support for my wraithguard), but i'm open to suggestions for loadout.
Thanks!

I am thinking option number 3. Best anti-tank with having some ability to take care of infantry. Wraithswaord... all it does it does is take up a valuable weapons slot...

Normally i'd agree, but i'm not really lacking in firepower elsewhere in the list (wraithguard, wave serpents with bright lances etc), so the point of them was to help out the wraithguard in a close combat jam.

I feel the sword is a trap, sure you reroll in CC but with only 2 attacks it is not worth giving up a heavy weapon on a durable accurate platform.
Lords are really meant for tar pitting rather than smashing enemy units to pieces. And the flamers will soften units before charging.
I always run my lords with BL, EML, 2 Flamers. I take all of them this way. It is really a good place for the more expensive heavy weapons and with the BS4 also a good place for single shot weapons.
Rerolling 2 WS4 CC attacks just isn't worth 10pts and a loss of a heavy weapon slot
Harlequins are the unit you want to help Wraith Guard in CC or possibly banshees. Lords just are not points effective in that role since they die to power fists just like Wraith Guard. They have the same weaknesses.

I've found the sword only useful for catching fast moving vehicles, the re-roll to hit is worth it in that instance when you only need one hit to wreck something.
Otherwise i go with 2 options.
Brightlance + EML
or
Scatter Laser + Shurican cannon
Depending on the list and what i need more of.

It largely depends on the points level tbh. At 1000pts or so 3 Wraithlords with Swords and an Avatar are a nightmare to deal with. People don't bring enough anti tank weaponry at that level to deal with them and will rarely have luxuries like Power Fists in their units.
At 1750-2000pts (i.e most tournaments) Wraithlords get consigned to an anti tank role. At these points levels there is too much firepower around from them to be able to just run forward and hit combat, in a fire support role you might be able to get yourself cover and last more than a turn. Even with the Sword you won't get enough kills to break anything quickly enough, so you either end up being tarpitted the entire game or just until something strong enough walks over and kills you in combat.

You should give them all wet noodles and bad language. that way they can hold their own against anything.
Seriously... wraithlords are only ok in this metagame. to easy to insta kill or drag down with poison. However. For fun play i would say give em a flamers and then RUSH>WAAAAAAAHHHHH

3rd loadout, for reasons above. BS4 is accurate, they're tough, and they're slow. Sword wraithlords tend to move for 2 turns, then when they're close the enemy turns a few lascannons their way and they melt. Walk, walk, die. At least with heavy weapons they're a threat all the way.

3rd loadout, definitely, a heavy support slot deserves some high strength firepower!

Apologies for not posting the full list (didn't want to tread on the toes of the army list section!)
The army goes something like this (from memory):
Eldrad
10 Wraithguard with Conceal Spiritseer
10 Wraithguard with Conceal Spiritseer
5 Wraithguard with conceal Warlock
in Wave Serpent with Twin linked Bright Lance
5 Wraithguard with conceal Warlock
in Wave Serpent with Twin linked Bright Lance
Wraithlord 1
Flamer
Flamer
Wraithsword
Wraithlord 2
Flamer
Flamer
Wraithsword
Bright Lance
Wraithlord 3
Flamer
Flamer
Eldar Missile Launcher
Bright Lance
Thats it from memory, it might not be exactly that. Thats the basis for equiping my wraithlords with close combat weapons - to support the little guys when they undoubtedly get charged.

One of my local Eldar players runs two of them each equipped with EML and Scatter Laser. Works really well against both low/mid AV vehicles and troops with the frag option and scatters. Just a thought.
