Is it possible to shoot at a unit and then assault a tank if the unit shot at both?

example:
Fire Warriors with carbines, EMP grenades, and a target lock

shoots at a group of boyz, but the leader shoots at a near by trukk

Fire Warriors assault the trukk

"[Target lock] enables the model to target a separate enemy unit to that engaged by the rest of its own unit." - Tau p28.

"a unit that fired in the shooting phase can only assault the unit that it shot at - it cannot assault a different unit to the one it previously shot at." - Rule book p33.

You can only assault the Boyz, as that is what the unit shot at.

I have read it as, no.

The unit has a target for shooting (and must assault it).

The one model may choose a different target, but the unit's target has not changed.

Unless that FW unit has a Shas'Ui, you can't take a target lock to start with...

The target lock is given to a single model (can only ever be the shas'ui), not the unit. Since the rest of the unit cannot assault the trukk (since they don't have the target locks) the Shas'ui cannot assault it either, as it would mean the rest of the unit has to follow him into an assault.

Small question, why would you even want to do it anyway? A bare minimum FW squad with that set-up runs at 105pts and needs to get stupidly close to an enemy.

It may be worth pointing out that as long as the assault is declared (and within range of) the unit shot, you ARE allowed to also assault the other unit so long as the multi-assault rules are followed.

But I doubt that was needed.

Maybe there is just one ork over there and the assault move would leave you out of range of the other 9478327234 of them for another round?

Wait, wait, wait...you do not look at individual models that shot at what when determining what a unit can assault, you look at the unit as a whole and determine what the unit can assault, right?

It shouldnt matter that the Shas'ui with Target Lock fired at one target, and the rest of the Fire Warriors shot at another, the unit shot at two targets, therefore has two targets to assault. Both of the targets was shot by the unit.

The unit fired at the orks, the shas'ui used the target lock to fire at the trukk instead, but the unit's primary target were the ork boyz, therefore they're the only assault target.

The target lock "enables the model to target a seperate enemy unit to that engaged by the rest of its own unit", which means that the unit must have already declared its target beforehand; the trukk is not the target of the unit, and therefore cannot be assaulted by the unit.
